How did your garden grow?

My gardens didn’t do so well this summer. The cherry tomatoes ran amok and I have a tremendous yield of them but the cucumbers, bell peppers, eggplants and so forth largely failed to produce. The herbs did just fine and are still producing but it’s hard to screw up herbs, they are basically just tasty weeds.

I think a lack of rain caused my garden to be only so-so this season.

I luckily skipped last year and we had a drought plus a heat wave. I decided to skip this year fearing the same and I’m glad I did because our weather was similar.

I still have lots of fruit trees, satsumas and oranges, that have produced well.

That sucks about your bell peppers. Those are my favorite.

reply

Fruit trees always interested me and I should put in a few apples…maybe next spring👍

My garden produced well until we had a terrible lengthy heatwave. I only did zucchini and bell peppers this year. Everything bounced back after the heatwave but then the squash bugs got the zucchini. 😞

We get some kind of beetle invasion from time to time. A water and Dawn soap mixture and some netting can help.

Thanks for the tip! I was using some sort of organic pest control spray but it obviously didn't do the job.

I’ll have to try that next spring😄

I harvested some carrots the other day. I'm gonna just pick as we need them. They're surprisingly difficult to pull up!

Also growing 3 stalks of Brussel sprouts. All was looking great, but now that the sprouts are growing, there's an infestation of some tiny black flies. Hopefully they will bugger off and have just become trapped under the mesh, but I fear the worst tbh 😥

Like I told fourmelons yesterday, a Dawn soap and water mix does drive a lot of pests out of your garden beds.

Just use a spray bottle, it won’t damage your fruits and veggies.

Mesh/netting helps a lot too.

I'll try that tip, thank you 👍

We had a lot of rain this spring which caused a delay in planting.

Cucumbers, Raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and Tomatillos were all decent.

We lacked a good steady weekly rain this season, it really jammed us up.

Fingers crossed for next spring and summer!

I like tasty weeds especially cannabis. 😂

FUCK YEAH✋🏻

I just cut off my one (one) superb looking raspberry!

My tomatoes have produced a tonne but the thing is we had a terrible late summer, very little sunshine, so I have a lot of big green tomatoes which I'm not sure are going to ripen on vine now. Temps are starting to go south and I've never done this before, so I'm not sure what's going to happen with them...

reply

I don’t know much about it but you might look into trying fried green tomatoes. I have never had them myself.

reply

Quite contrarily.
