Whatever happened to "Otter"?
What?
sharehttps://moviechat.org/user/Otter
I don't know.
https://moviechat.org/user/Quasimodo
I don't know what happened to him, either.
24000 posts and just disappeared. Otter had a lot of good contributions too. I do respect people who decided to quit without commenting on the decision or deleting.
shareAgreed on both points. In the latter's case, one can always come back if they ever want to with a minimum of fuss. I'm picturing an irl parallel to the trope of saying goodbye to someone, and then having a moment of awkwardness if you bump in to them soon after.
shareprobably having a Whale of a time somewhere else
shareOtter has been practicing a lot with his jug band getting ready for Christmas.
shareQuasimodo? Is that name ringing any bells?
shareThe Stygiannati finally got him😵

Ha!
shareHa!
We just re-watched that a few years ago.
Weird how it never attained the following other Christmas shows did.
Yeah , it’s a bit of a forgotten classic though I’m surprised several posters here got the reference. But then again we are a bunch of movie nerds🤓
shareI got one more Christmas show that needs more love:

Funny, but perhaps not. I have a Thoughtful and sweet Puerto Rican coworker, she bakes pies and blows up balloons for everyone that’s retiring. She asked me this year when I’m retiring and I explained ‘The Irish Goodbye to her…’ she started crying… it hurt my heart.
You know, an Irish guy never says goodbye, there is NO RETIREMENT party, we just bounce, fuck goodbyes.
but we can drink and sing the pogues' body of an american just like in the wire
at the wake right?!
and its all good, if there ain't no hole in the washtub!
Am I the only one who thought Otter was a woman? Especially odd, because my default setting is the old internet axiom that "there are no women on the internet." :D
shareI didn't interact with them much but I too assumed they were a woman, not even sure why, maybe because their account is named after a cute animal or something.
shareIIRC, Otter may have been the first poster I actually had a conversation with here. It was pleasant, so we would interact every so often. Can't put my finger on it, but I'm fairly sure Otter is a woman of maturity, possibly from the SW US.
shareI think you're close. If I remember correctly, I think Otter said she (I'll use "she," since it does seem like she was female) lived fairly close to the San Francisco/Carmel area. Otter was a really descriptive writer and I seem to remember that she wrote about walking on the beaches in the SF/Carmel area and also walking in the open fields near there also (more inland, I believe... it sounded really peaceful from the way she wrote about it). And I also believe you're correct about her age as well.
shareSomeone told me she was a woman.
shareI'm pretty sure Otter responded to a post of mine in a way that indicated she was a woman; in other words, she referred to herself as being female. Regardless, it seems quite a few of us were under the impression she was a woman.
shareI thought so too, not that it’s my business.
shareKind of weird that when we referred to her as a "he" or "she", they never corrected us.
shareI could never figure out if Otter was a gay man or lesbian woman either (or neither). Regardless, I liked the poster a lot...he/she was a smart cookie and we had some good conversations here. I hope nothing bad happened to him/her.
I liked Quasimodo also. He was one of the few posters here who liked golf and we had some good conversations about the LPGA here. Again, I hope nothing bad happened to him.
And I still miss hownos a lot also.
Same.
Whatever her/his reason for leaving - I hope it was on her/his terms and not from an unfortunate happenstance.
I'll just assume people's interests/hobbies change over time. There are plenty of forums I've previously been active in and the only thing constant in life is change, or something to that effect.
Wow, haven't heard Quas's name in a while. I tried engaging him once or twice but don't recall if he ever replied.
And holy crap, hownos was like the #1 poster on the site. I always suspected he was a bot, as iirc, he'd ask random questions and never reply. Or am I thinking about someone else...?
No, hownos would usually respond if you asked him something. I think you're thinking about good ol' BennyMuso (sp?) as the poster/bot that asked random questions and never responded. I believe BennyMuso got banned... whoever was behind that username started a new account earlier this year (something like BennyMuso2), but either got banned or self-deleted (I can't remember which it was).
shareAh, yeah I wasn't sure what the poster's name was, but it was bizarre how often and random the questions were. I had a working theory the site owner/SysOp wanted the forums to appear more busy. :D
shareI thought they were female.
shareWent to Animal House
shareI have to admit I clicked on this thread fully expecting it to be about that Otter, too. But now that I think about it, didn't the movie end with "what happened tos" for all the characters...?
shareIt did.
D-Day had the best one…’whereabouts unknown.’
Every school, every job, every romantic relationship ends best with ‘whereabouts unknown.’
Keep them guessing and move it along, it’s called ‘The Irish Goodbye.’
That’s how you do it.
Nice. It's all coming back to me, seen it so many times but not lately.
Funny, over the years, I've just naturally gotten tired of drawn-out goodbyes and "got okay" with making quicker and quicker exits. Only years later did I learn it had a name.
I warned him…
shareI liked Otter a lot. She was really intelligent, well-read, and always thoughtful in her posts and responses. I have been wondering what happened to her, too, and hope all is well.
