you can go to a gun range and rent different guns and try them out and take classes on proper technique/maintenance for learning purposes. knowing your state of mind is important, if you question your ability of being responsible your probably best not owning.

shareI used to own a .38 special handgun but when my daughter was born I got rid of it for safety reasons. However when my daughter was 6 I took her to a gun range and taught her gun safety and how to use a handgun. Once she figured out the gun sites she was a sharpshooter. Since then I taught my daughter to fire various handguns, rifles and shotguns and she is scary accurate with all of them.

If you don't know how to use them there are plenty of courses you could take.
If you are afraid of the damn things then the more you practice with them your fear will go away.
If you're not in the perfect state of mind to own a firearm then you probably shouldn't.
