This *is* a movie forum, correct?

Only three of the sixteen posts on the first page of my "latest posts" feed were about movies; the rest was political BS.

**Mods: I implore you to implement an option to [hide] the Politics forum, and ideally, certain "celebrities'" forums from [one's personal] "latest posts" feed.

As this is an election year, I fear it's only going to get worse as time goes by, and I'd rather not break my streak of 0 users blocked here. If I notice certain users not even bothering to discuss movies here, I can only assume they are bad actors and though I despise censorship of any kind, it kind of defeats the purpose of coming to a "movie forum" after a while, and a guy can only take so much...

reply

It is, but it's basically entirely unmoderated. So the lunatics have taken over.

This is the end result of essentially zero moderation. The people you see making politically antagonising threads after another likely have no other (sizable) communities to go to. They've been banned from everywhere else. This is it. So they post here.

reply

Let us also remember that, in addition to having nowhere else to vent their impotent rage, these people have accomplished nothing significant with their lives and thus feel compelled to act out in this manner.

reply

Oh, I was active on the IMDb forums for near twenty year, so I don't so much mind the lack of moderation, I just miss the option to hide the Politics forum posts from IMDb's General Discussion aka the "latest posts" feed here.

But yeah, as reluctant as I am to put any user on "ignore" here, I'm kind of seeing a pattern of some newer posters appearing to post nothing but political posts, so I might have to start. :/

reply

Last night, I checked 'latest posts' before going to sleep, and I had to go to page 3 before I saw a non-political thread. It was disheartening, to say the least.

The best we can do is create posts and reply to threads on film/tv titles, although that seems like trying to ice skate uphill at this point.

reply

Part of it is the design. There's a dedicated movie/TV discussion forum but it's buried below general/politics. If they were alongside general, it would be better.

reply

Yes, that's a fair point. I've tried reviving some of the old legacy boards from the IMDb days, like VFX and whatnot, but they quickly got buried, and no one saw them.

reply

Yeah, back when IMDb had forums, I basically lived in the horror board, and individual title boards for movies I had just watched and wanted to chat about.

reply

If there are more threads about movies, I will of course reply to them as well. Also even the existing movie related threads don't have that many replies.

I am someone who loves movies from the 70s-90s. But I am not that niche. The lesser B movie threads go over my head.

reply

Even when people do post about movies on the dedicated movie boards, the topics are quickly derailed by 'culture war' nonsense.

It can all get pretty tiresome.

There are some excellent posters here. But the noise to signal ratio is a bit off. And you're right: it'll get worse towards November. Those of us outside of the USA may have to check out for a while.

reply

The IMDb message boards were a movie forum. All MovieChat's boards are carried over from IMDb, including General Discussion and Politics. It's all about continuing IMDb's legacy.

We need more activity here, not less. Only a fool would start eliminating boards and banning topics like politics and current events. And only an idiot would call someone who raises important issues a "bad actor".

It's all part of the mix.

reply

At the same time, I suspect a bunch of newbies are put off all the time by the extremist shit-slinging that occurs on here.

reply

That's politics. IMDb's Politics board was a zoo too. Many forums have this political mudslinging up until the election.

reply

NO...POLITICS HAS A CAGE HERE...IT NEEDS TO STAY IN IT;S CAGE OR BE PUT DOWN...PERIOD.

REGARDLESS...NOTHING WORTH A DAMN COMES FROM THOS SCREAMING MATCHES....NUKE THE WHOLE FUCKING THING....SMILES ALL AROUND.

Dang, OTB, getting ad hominemed by you was not on my bingo card for tonight. I hope and suspect you misunderstood my points. Slightly edited OP [in brackets] for clarity. IMDb (and f|b, which more closely copied its format) had an option called "Include Politics posts in General Discussion?" with a checkbox the user could check or not.

See, I wasn't suggesting eliminating boards from *the* site, just from *my* sight, specifically in *my* "latest posts" feed, because I come to a site called "moviechat" to talk about movies. And sure, it's fun to occasionally discus other topics with people you share a common interest with, but I still question why anyone would come to a movie forum site and create *nothing but* political posts, seeing as how there are plenty of more appropriate forums out there that cater to politics. But hey, it's a free country and of course IMDb had a Politics forum, but that little checkbox really gave each user the option to cut down on the signal to noise ratio in the General Discussion feed.

reply

Sorry Nanook of the North, I wasn't paying attention. It's not a personal attack against you.

But I have heard this before, that any discussion not about movies is off topic.

reply

Weird, I could have sworn I replied to this hours ago. IIRC it went something like:

[heart emoji]

I just want options, man!

[edit] Since I started the post with an old school heart emoji (angle bracket+3) I must have fucked with the html markup (another complaint I have about this place, but that's not important right now...).

Outstanding work! Might even get me to use FF again, or Waterfox. Can't remember why I installed the latter, but it's there...

Thanks!

reply

Have you been asleep for the past 8 years? Everywhere you go people have been talking politics online, even in places where the site's main purpose had nothing to do with it! There's no escaping it.

reply

STOP DOING IT...PROBLEM SOLVED.

reply

Doing what? Buying donuts? Never!

Although the one got today from Tim Hortons was stale - the bastards.

reply

I agree with you. Also asked the Mods to lock out the political stuff as well.

reply

It doesn't feel like it.
I quickly block those who never talk movies to save space for those who do.
