Anyone ever have a party line telephone?

We had one in Key West, FL up until the late 70s.

When I was a kid, the phone out at the cabin was on a party line until the early 80s I think.

reply

Never had a party line, but in my early years, we still had an operator who connected calls for us. You'd pick up the phone (no dial on the phone itself at the time) and you'd hear, "Operator. Number please." Our phone number was Hopkins 9-2598, or you could say it as HO9-2598.

Yeah, I'm that old. Well, okay - we lived in a small suburb of Chicago back then, so...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

reply

No matter how old you are, you're a sweetheart ❤

reply

Aw, thank you! Not everyone is lucky enough to survive to "senior status."
Case in point: my only sister died at age 39.

We didn't have an official party line, but there were many times where I would call a friend and join the call with another friend, and then they would join their calls with two friends and before you knew it we had half a dozen compadres on the same call.

It's remarkable that conveniences have advanced such that we can all join a Zoom session at the same time after watching a movie, but there's progress for you!

reply

No, but I really like Pillow Talk.

reply

I remember seeing that movie at the drive-in theater with my parents and five siblings.

reply

Cute movie.

reply

Back when it was okay to be just a "cute movie." I think I was about 10 years old at the time.

reply

Yes - we did until my early teens in the 60's.

reply

Technically no but I did live in an apartment complex where the phone lines would cross over somehow. You'd pick up the phone and two people would already be talking. Or worse you're on the phone and someone else would come on the line.

reply

My granny had one.

Don't ever recall any parties though.

reply

No, didn't even know there was such a thing till this thread.
