Do you like cookouts / picnics / eating outside?

I don't, and I don't get why it has such widespread appeal. If you're not fighting the wind to keep your chips and napkins from blowing off your flimsy paper plate, you're probably fighting flies and other insects to keep them away from the food.

And the food is typically nothing to write home about. If it's a picnic then it's probably just sandwiches, chips, and other cold food, and if it's a cookout, it's probably just hamburgers with malformed (too thick and too small in diameter), overcooked, unseasoned, dry patties and hot dogs. There's often some guy there who thinks he's really good at hand-forming and cooking hamburger patties on a grill, but he never actually is.

Eating outside in general doesn't bother me all that much. Typically I eat my lunch while walking back to work from my lunch break since the building that I work from is right next door to a fast food restaurant.

I could take my lunch back to the break room but what's the point, ya know?

reply

Nothing more pleasant that having a meal outside.

If you think you're fighting the wind and the bugs all the time, you're doing it wrong.

reply

I'm pretty much with you. Sitting on the ground is definitely out. But even if it was al fresco at an upscale restaurant, the weather would have to be just about perfect with little to no wind, and shaded from the sun.

If beer is involved, well then anything goes :)

Ain’t that the truth…

I love eating outside in ‘Sunny’ Bournemouth. My wife is Indonesian and their culture is all about food, so it’s never boring.

reply

Absolutely yes - I love being outside and having meals and parties on my patio - I have an outside fan that keeps most of the bugs away. I like to eat outside at restaurants also.

Cooking and eating outside is a big thing where I live. I have a big bbq pit, smoker, outdoor deep fryer and burners and large pots for boiling crawfish, shrimp or crabs. It’s really part of the culture here.

I just cooked and ate outside. The longer they soak after the boil the stronger the spice is, so it’s the cook’s job to taste them every few minutes to decide when to pull them out of the water. :)

Good stuff…mud bugs, corn, potatoes and a beer or two….yeah, seasoning and timing are key….I’m sure you probably use better stuff than Tony Chachere’s but in a pinch it’ll work. Crawfish boil definitely an outside event…

reply

I used Zatarain’s boil mix this time. But yep, the timing really is the key.
