A lot of people think this is a Neil Sedaka song, & they're sort of right. That's him on the Harmony vocal, plus his arrangement & regular backing vocalists & musicians.
But because he didn't initially record it at his record labels Studio, (& when he did re-record it at RCA studio, the songwriters were dissatisfied with his performance) his lead vocal was replaced with Gene's.

Herman's Hermits - No Milk Today (1966).
They performed at a free concert at a carnival around 2010. The stage was next to a train track. When a train roared by, he'd break into a Johnny Cash song, "I Hear a Train a Comin.'" When the train was gone, he picked up exactly where he left off in his own song. He signed every autograph sought after the concert, until the line was finished.
