Is "Speed 2: Cruise Control" (1997) really as bad as most say in your opinion?

Granted, yeah, its a lot worse than the very good original "Speed" (1994) by same director Jan De Bont and is arguably his weakest movie too and it is weak and forgettable but as bad as most say?

And even if you found it unsatisfying, was there anything good or redeeming about it?

And also... What did you think of the lead villain Geiger played by Willem Dafoe as well as his infatuation with leeches and did he really lose his job because his company found out that he used leeches as medicine? And this made him crazy and want to hi-jack the ship?

And any other elements to it.

Was the script, plot, action etc and acting all that bad in your opinion? Direction? Was it really totally unexciting and forgettable? Did it have noticeable plot holes and goofs that are irritating even by silly action movie standards?

Anyone here actually LIKED it, despite the flaws AND negative reputation overall, even if its definitely below "Speed" itself? Cheers.

P.S. And what do we think about it also being released same year, 1997, as another big boat hit - "Titanic"?

SPEED was such a good movie that this really didn't need a sequel at the time in 1997 because moviegoers weren't thinking "Let's make a sequel" because sometimes, not every movie needs to be a franchise is what the mindset was

True and once Keanu jumped ship the movie lost it's star power since Bullock was filling theatre seats for rom coms as opposed to action movies.

I think it's an OK film. Gets way too much hate. Like there are way worse films out there. It's nowhere near "hot garbage''

I think the bad rap is due to the fact that the first Speed is an excellent film & a sequel was just unnecessary.

I saw it in the theater and I didn't like it.

I wouldn't have expected most to like it anyway given the mostly terrible reviews and low scores but is it as terrible as many say do you think even if it isn't any good overall?

reply

You may like it better than me. I just remember it was a big disappointment. I rewatched some of it when it came on TV and my opinion didn't change.

Watched it cinema and had a fairly good time. Brainless fun - but nothing compared to the first movie. Jason Patric was just not really the best choice and did have little chemistry with Sandra.

The cruise setting on the other hand was nice. And definitely the best part of the movie were "UB40". The whole soundtrack was pretty great, but "Tell Me Is It True" was the biggest track there.
