Tipping: Is it out of control?

Just got asked to tip the person at the retail store for ringing up my purchase. I do not mind tipping, but in some instances it is not warranted. What are everyone’s stances on tipping?

reply

if they make the effort I tip some

I have never ever heard of tipping the retail person.. Never.. What has this world come to folks?? Now, if I get a to go order from a restaurant, I tip, but retail?? Never

reply

In the US - yes it most defiantly is out of control.

Places like Panera ask if I want to tip and I always hit the no button without blinking an eye. I have to stand in line to order, pick up my food, and clear off my table. Nope. I don't tip for carryout either, but do for delivery services.

I pretty much tip only to people who perform a direct service to me - not the cooks, dishwashers, behind the scenes people.

I tip when I feel the service warrants tipping. We don't eat out at restaurants often as it is a big waste of money and my wife's Celiac Disease makes the process of navigating their menu a real hassle (No wheat, barley, quinoa, dextrose, malt, fructose, corn, cornstarch, maltodextros, etc). If we find a place that she can eat at, tipping is usually included as there's a lot for the staff to consider.

How about places that ask for a tip before you receive any service? You know damn well if you don't tip they will spit on your food.

reply

If it tastes extra salty, then you really have to worry 😳

reply

I never use the food delivery services but my understanding is that if the delivery people don’t think the tip is worthwhile they won’t accept the run.

reply

I'm talking about when you walk up to the counter to order and they hand you a credit card slip with a place for a tip on it before you've received any service or even product.

I want to be perfectly clear that I am 100% against cow tipping. It is inhumane.
