You buying anything in the black Friday sales

I'm getting a mattress and Christmas presents for my nephews.

reply

No. I wouldn't go anywhere near those stores on the day after Thanksgiving (the proper term). The holidays are not about pushing, shoving and trampling one another over some shoddy imported junk merchandise.

These After-Thanksgiving Sales (also the proper term) have been turned into one of the biggest con games ever conceived. Retailers mark up the prices, then stick a "40% off" tag on the items and hype it up as the greatest, must-attend, once-in-a-lifetime sales event of the year.

Stores conduct sales all throughout the year, with much better savings than this bogus event. Keep an eye out for these. If you see an item at a Memorial Day Sale that you know someone would like as a gift, purchase it then and store it away until December. You can have the majority of your shopping finished before Halloween, and save a lot more money.

There is no reason to ruin the Thanksgiving weekend.

reply

Day After Thanksgiving or Black Friday - both mean the same thing. Not a big deal, IMO.

reply

There is a big difference in meaning. The proper term acknowledges Thanksgiving Day as the reason for the long weekend. A day to be grateful and to take a break.

The bogus term is the invention of the greedy giant retailers who see it as nothing but another money-making opportunity. The emphasis is on consumerism, commercialism and materialism, not on being thankful.

LOL

reply

I fail to see what is so funny about this.

reply

It's funny because you're getting all upset over nothing. You can call the Friday after Thanksgiving anything you want but getting mad because others don't see it your way is just silly. Thanksgiving is just one day not a four day weekend.

I'm fairly certain this SaveTheSeason guy is just a troll, and/or a sock of another user here.

I mean, who creates a sole MovieChat account just to spew vitriol at trivial seasonal traditions. He's started posts as far back as 4 years and they're all just this same shit.

reply

There are "seasonal traditions" and then there are contrived events; in this case it's a contrived event that emphasizes materialism rather than a holiday dedicated to giving thanks.

Anyone who believes they are getting a "good deal" and willingly participate in the madness and mayhem have been brainwashed by the advertising industry and media. Holidays are a time to take a break, not a time to sit in traffic and get into fistfights over parking spaces, or to shove and trample one another over some perceived "bargain."

Turkey dinners, parades and football games are Thanksgiving traditions. Commercialism is not.

reply

Yeah, I really have no interest in debating this stuff on a movie forum.

reply

"Thanksgiving" means "giving thanks" not "buying stuff."

We've been hearing about this "Black Friday" garbage since October. It gets more mention than Thanksgiving, and it's sickening. The retailers, advertising industry and media are trying to shift the emphasis away from being grateful to wanting more, more, more. It's all about money and greed, and mainly about filling the pockets of the elite one percent at the expense of others.

reply

I have never been to a store on Black Friday in my life. I've seen the crowds and lines and want nothing to do with it lol.

reply

WALMART was the worst when it came to Black Friday and people being trampled just to save a few bucks on Big Screen TV's.. Now, they just enter WALMART, pick up the TV and run out the door and once they make it out, they can't be pursued.. Grocery stores are the same way, only now, some stores are installing locks on the shopping cart wheels to prevent theft..

reply

Nope. Crowds are not my thing.

reply

I 100% support this statement.
If the friends and family get sport or concert tickets they know not to include me.

My little dog and some music in my garage is crowd enough for me:)

reply

I do that with movies. Easy way to prep for the hot part of the summer. Dog loves.

reply

Oh yes, I love the dogs. We watched the Westminster Dog Show on the TV today in between chopping and hauling in firewood, I regret not watching the whole thing but we hosted the holiday so there was just too much to do.

It was years ago that I lost my sweet pitbull Whitey and never had the heart to get another dog until someone in my house fell ill and needed a 'companion dog' as the doctor called it.

So now I have Leia, she's small, bossy, loud and annoying and I didn't even want her but now she's become my Pal for life. I adore this little pest lol!

reply

Isn't that how it always goes. After my pug, Maxi, died, I swore off pets.

Now I got my Bull-Dane Niles, an 18 year old Maine Coon Krystal, and seven hilarious chickens. My wife never had pets and, well, we got them. I protested as I only remember the losses. But, life moves on and you gotta enjoy them. Even if they're naught.

reply

I do love pets, and not to sound Machiavellian but they certainly have their uses: security and protection, pest control, and they make good company too. Dogs are greatly revered for their fierce loyalty, tamed Horses have changed history many times and a good cat will take delight in killing any snake or mouse that comes by their 'den'/your home.

Man and animal have been dependent upon each other for a really long time, some sources state tens of thousands of years! I'm no expert but I'd bet that the various wild dogs (dingos, wolves, coyotes) may have been the first domesticated beasts as their scavenging and hunting instincts would have naturally led them to human settlements. A wolf would know that a bunch of cavemen sitting around a fire means lots of scraps and bones tossed in a pile behind the settlement and who doesn't like a free meal? Maybe canine loyalty to man started there..?

reply

I also watched the dog show. Love those pups!

reply

So many beautiful dogs, many of which I've never seen before and likely never will.
I love the Great Danes but I prefer a small dog. I met four Great Danes while attempting to buy a property from a guy upstate, they were extremely intimidating from afar and when they raced towards me I thought I was burnt bread!

They were sweethearts and not murderous at all once we got to know each other:)
Dogs are one of the animal cornerstones of civilization, along with with chickens, pigs and horses.

reply

I usually watch that after the parade, but did not today.

Signed, million man.

reply

Today I got all the black friday Amazon channel specials....AMC, Paramount, Starz each for 2$ a month.

reply

No.

reply

No. I'll pay extra not to have to deal with lines or getting trampled. Also I have to work.

Signed, million man.

reply

Nope. Never have, never will.
