Has there EVER been a cooler show theme than Peter Gunn?

I don’t think so. There have been some great ones: Hawaii-50, Mary Tyler Moore, the Lone Ranger, Mission:Impossible, Cheers. TV theme songs seem to have sucked more with each passing year, AND with the cutting-back on time devoted to opening credits. What do you think? Is there anything more noire and just COOL than this, from an era when gentlemen wore Fedora hats and removed them indoors?

It’s called “jazz.” Don’t be a square.

I don't know about cool, but I saw 'Peter Gunn' before reading the whole title and was already humming it.

It is one of the best themes ever. There are a few versions of it. The original Henry Mancini version, the surf rock version by Duane Eddy and another rock version by The Art of Noise (also featuring Duane Eddy).

I’m also a big fan of the original TV show. MeTV plays it late Sunday night/early Monday morning.

It's one of the best, though for me it's the Spy Hunter theme (1983 video arcade game from Bally Midway), because Peter Gunn was long before my time.

My favorite TV show theme songs are from:

- The Dukes of Hazzard (the only one I know of that was written and performed by a super star / living legend)

- Magnum, P.I. (the second and far more famous version that replaced the forgettable first version partway through the first season)

- The Jeffersons (spectacular vocals from Ja'Net DuBois)

- Sledge Hammer! (which was by Danny Elfman)

Same here, even in its 8 bit form it’s memorable. I didn’t learn about the Peter Gunn theme until I was an adult

Peter Gunn is hard to beat. Besides Hawaii Five-O, another one that sticks out for me is the theme from Mod Squad.

It's great...but I love these:

1) "Rockford Files Theme" -- Coolest theme ever for the coolest show ever.
2) "Bonanza" (courtesy of the late, great Tommy Tedesco)
3) "Welcome Back, Kotter Theme" - the great John Sebastian
