Shame on Macy's

(For our posters who live outside of North America, it's a major department store here in the U.S.)

I saw their "Christmas" commercial on October 22, 2023 during an NFL game, of all places. And it had a full-blown "Christmas" theme... people shopping in a store decked out with decorations and a boy interacting with Santa Claus. Nothing subtle here. I assume it had "Christmas" music, too, but I can't say for certain because I always mute the idiotic commercials.

We haven't even celebrated Halloween yet. October is too early for this. It would be more appropriate for it to air during the month of December. And I don't understand why they chose a football (🏈) game to show it. The viewer demographics don't make sense for this type of ad.

Way to go, Macy's. Let's cheapen and trivialize the experience of what should be a special time of year.

Save the holiday season.

This thread needs a theme song.

And I'll bet those didn't air in mid-October.

reply

I don't recall but I'm sure you are correct.

reply

I agree. Christmas season starts the day after Thanksgiving. I'm presently celebrating Halloween πŸŽƒ

reply

Christmas is the lord's day. Halloween is the devil's day.

reply

Halloween is the day that the Great Pumpkin arises out of his pumpkin patch and gives candy to all the good boys and girls.

Devil's night is October 30

Easter celebrates the greatest event in history, but a lot of people prefer the day everybody gives everybody else a bunch of cheap crap made in China.

reply

I agree with you. Easter is the important Christian holiday. Christmas was just invented to compete with the Roman Saturnalia and the Winter Solstice.

Devil's Night. Now that's some twisted stuff. But Halloween is the occult holiday.

reply

I know most Christians would say the greatest event in history is the Resurrection but, for my money, I would take Jesus' baptism

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%201%3A9-11&version=NIV

9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: β€œYou are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

WOW! God's voice! Weren't there a bunch of people at the river at the time? Likely some Roman soldiers/police?

reply

I'd go with Resurrection because that's the event which defines Christianity. Before that, he was a man. And without it, he could be just another powerful rabbi.

Does anyone know the day of Christ's baptism?

reply

No, the specific Baptism date, like that of the birth of Christ, is not mentioned in the Scriptural accounts. If the dates ever were recorded, they have been lost over time.
The major Christian denominations commemorate Christ's Baptism in January, usually the week after the Feast of the Epiphany.

reply

Okay, I know none of the dates are proofed and accurate. I just wondered if and when most churches celebrate it.

reply

Well as you mentioned, Christmas is based on pagan holidays so not sure why you don't seem to have a problem with that.

Christmas is a very secular holiday for many people just as Halloween has nothing to do with the occult for most.

reply

I'm pagan. Why would I have a problem with it? 🀣

Actually, Halloween was the Catholic Church's co-option of a pagan holiday. Over time it's become more rooted in the occult than Christianity.

reply

😠 I see that Old Navy has its Christmas commercial out there already. Plenty of stores have Christmas decorations on the shelves already. I can understand early displays at craft stores to allow folks time to complete their projects. Otherwise, I wish they'd wait until the week of Thanksgiving. πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

reply

I saw that one, too. Old Navy should also be ashamed.

reply

Didn't you just love the fake New Jersey accent in that ad? πŸ™„πŸ€£

reply

I didn't hear it, just saw it only. I always have the stupid commercials on mute.

reply

I do too, but sometimes I'm not near the remote so I'm tortured by them.

reply

It's WAY too early, it's like a Back To School commercial right after July 4th.

Slow down and enjoy things at the appropriate time.

reply

Exactly. The holiday season is a special time of year. Don't cheapen the experience with oversaturation and overkill. These retailers aren't celebrating the holiday anyway; it's just greed and materialism.

reply

Not just a Macy's thing. Hallmark started their holiday movies on Oct 20th. Always before Halloween, every year.

reply

The Hallmark Channel shows "Christmas" movies during the summer. This is disgraceful.

reply

The correct terminology is "winter holiday" movies since they also show Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year's (including Chinese New Year), etc. movies.

reply

"Winter holiday" or whatever they call them, it doesn't matter. These movies don't need to be broadcast during the summer. Who wants to see this stuff in the middle of July with the miserable heat and humidity?

reply

I think it's silly, but on a couple of the free streaming services, they're already claiming some Christmas movies are "leaving soon."

reply

I got annoyed when I was visiting Hobby Lobby in September and they already had their Christmas stuff out. I was like, "Wait a minute! We haven't even had Halloween yet, what's the deal?!" Usually the stores wait until actual Halloween to put the Christmas stuff out, so this super-early habit is really bothering me too.

reply

You have to remember that Hobby Lobby doesn't do anything for Halloween.

reply

Uh, they kinda do. I've seen them sell pumpkins, scarecrows, bats, etc. Exactly which Hobby Lobby do you shop at?

reply

Those things are considered "Fall". They don't do Halloween for religious reasons - you won't find any ghosts, goblins, witches, haunted houses, etc. in any of their stores.

reply

With all the brick-and-mortar stores closing these days, I don't fault Macy's for advertising early.

reply

Walmart also has a holiday ad they are running during sporting events - just saw it again last night during the MLB championship game.

reply

The brick-and-mortar stores are closing in large part due to the desperate feckless management of being run by somebody’s brudder-in-law with a degree from Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep U.

reply

Nepotism kills capitalism. I know because I work for the owner's dumb son.

reply

I was just there last week. They aren't made up for Christmas yet. Probably shot the commercail last year.
