During lockdown I watched alot of Hitchcock Presents. I've been watching Thriller with the wonderful Boris Karloff on YouTube this week - never heard of it but I love it πŸ˜ƒ.

Are there any other series akin to these? Don't mind what era.

reply

Probably you already know American Horror Story.

And I always like to (re-)watch Medical Detectives.

reply

Have you seen many Karloff films? Not just his early horror works, I was going to recommend "The Body Snatcher" from the late 1940s, where Karloff plays a grave robber, and "The Raven" from the early 1960s, where I he has a grand time playing off Vincent Price and Peter Lorre.

He was a terrific actor, and by all accounts, a lovely man.

reply

I've only seen a couple. I know the mummy was one. And one where his character was an actor who murdered people (I think?).

reply

The raven sounds good, thanks for the recommendation πŸ‘

Only discovered recently that Karloff was half Indian on his mother's side. His high-born British siblings apparently gave him a bit of the high-hat growing up.

He was, indeed, a charming, elegant fellow. No one will ever forget him as the voice of 'The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

reply

I was surprised to hear about his Indian ancestry for about a tenth of a second, it's one of those things where once somebody says it you go "OOOOHhhhhhhh..... right.". It seemed immediately obvious, after decades of looking at him.

And his real name, BTW, was William Henry Pratt. Bill Pratt. Not a name suitable for the horror genre, but then, he didn't start out in the horror genre, he just got famous for it. But he did choose the name "Karloff" because it was an ethnic name, but one that hid his real ethnicity.

One Step Beyond

reply

Seconded. Some great little tales in that.

reply

I think I've seen some of those. I liked this series too.

Tales of the Unexpected (aka Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected) anthology show from 1979 to 1988.

The Hitchhiker anthology show from 1989 to 1991.

The Ray Bradbury Theatre anthology show from 1985 to 1992.

Not sure if you've read them or not but years ago Dell put out a bunch of short stories under the banner of Alfred Hitchcock and they're quite fun - here's a cover of just one:

Kolchak: The Night Stalker

reply

Ooh, I've never heard of this one. Sounds a bit like x-files. I'll have a look, thank you πŸ‘

reply

Indeed, Chris Carter has stated that Kolchak was one of his major inspirations for creating the show...

I was a huge fan of the series when it originally aired, although it was not exactly the most appropriate fare for my eight-year-old self!

The Outer Limits (1963)
