Old movie characters whose love interests are 30-40 years younger

I'd love to know who are what started this trend. I watched a movie recently and the actor would never see 55 again, but he was chasing a young woman barely 23 years old, and she found him irresistable.

It seemed acceptable back in the 1950s, but why?

To me, it looks really weird. But it also begs the question, why are these old guys not married? Why are they single and ready to date? I've always found it baffling they seemingly have no romantic history.

rear window was about 18 years. i think they wanted the big name male star with the younger woman even though most people back then married people around their own age. the man was usually a few years older than the woman. like my father was three years older than my mother.

How old are Tom Cruise's and Brat Pitt's leading ladies? Because yeah, Hollywood has done this forever, the Suits who makes these decisions think that leading men are still attractive at sixty, and leading women become undesirable at thirty.

But yeah, it was even more rampant back in the day, when Roger Moore was nailing 20-year-old Bond Girls as he himself pushed sixty, and further back, Audrey Hepburn was making a career of romancing older men. During the 1950s her leading men were usually a few decades older - Fred Astaire, Gary Cooper, Humphrey Bogart, while she herself usually played a girl who was younger than her real age. In "Sabrina" her character seemed to be 18 in the opening scenes, while her love interest Humphrey Bogart was 55 and only had a couple of years to live.

I know that Tom Cruise is in his 60s now but in Top Gun Maverick I thought Jennifer Connelly was age appropriate as a love interest. She's 52.
