Why are so many fictional dogs named Max?

In a long list of movies and stories, a dog is named Max. What is that about? Is it a reference to something?

Thank you, bobbydallas. Yes, it is, and I like it too. I've just been wondering why the name has so many appearances in fiction regarding dogs. It seems that jonathan_k80 has answered my question, though.

It could be a reference to other movies with a dog named Max. And so on.

Betcha can't guess what my father named a male dog we had. Hint, my father was a big Johnny Cash fan.

Thank you, beancrisp. Were you saying that your family dog was named Max, or was it something else that had to do with Johnny Cash? I never knew anything about that man, and therefore had no idea what you were referring to.

reply

I really don't like it.

Somehow the only dog named Max I can think of is in the movie Terminator 2. It's John's dog. But I can think of plenty of movies where a dog isn't named Max.
The Adventures of Milo and Otis.
Homeward Bound The Incredible Journey
Beethoven
101 Dalmations
Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (though the dog Brewl is only in one scene but it counts)
Lassie
The Shaggy Dog the 1950s one
Peter Pan
Lady and the Tramp
