What does WOKE mean?

Wikipedia says that Woke is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination". Beginning in the 2010s, it came to encompass a broader awareness of social inequalities such as sexism.

So why do so many here act as though 'Woke' is Leftist? Does the Right believe that being alert to sexism, prejudice and discrimination is a bad thing? Or does the Right believe that sexism, prejudice and discrimination don't exist in the United States?

I can surmise that the Right believes that people have gone to far with this by hiring more women and minorities but why is that such an objectionable thing to do?

yes , you answered your own question.
Its all about where the line is drawn
Everyone has a different idea so the line is just a color coating the field.

Therefore anytime anyone says "woke" they could mean anything

The term has expanded to awareness of social justice as it relates to race, gender, sexuality and many other issues. Wokeness includes several philosophies like critical race theory, DEI, EQUITY, intersectionality, body positivity, environmental justice, racial justice, postmodernism, postcolonialism, queer theory, gender theory, anti-racism , restorative justice and critical legal studies.

The article below shows how conservatives and progressives view the concept of wokeness.

Multiple Chinese immigrants who fled Mao's China have compared wokeness to the cultural revolution that tore down Chinese culture and supplanted it with Mao's communist beliefs.

I think most people wouldn't object to a company striving to hire more women and minorities but they would object to hiring quotas. I want the best qualified people performing the surgery on my heart, flying the plane that I am boarding, building the bridges that I use and fixing the elevators that I enter. The airline in the article below plans to turn away white males in favor of "underrepresented groups" and that is discriminatory against white males. Most people want equality of opportunity but the social justice advocates generally want equality of outcomes.

it is objectionable to them because these people - the type of people Trump is thinking when he says he loves the poor - have only their whiteness to cherish, to defend. Women and nonwhites were not competing against them in the job market. Now, and for some time, they do.

What was the last straw was Obama elected to President. It brought an existential crisis on the relatively uneducated whites who have been taught by their parents and grandparents that their whiteness will unlock many doors for them and that the nonwhites will find barriers to entry, barriers that don't exist for such whites.

That is the only reason Trump became President... because these whites were brought up on the belief that the lowest white was higher than the highest nonwhite, and that was a belief that was in danger of being made redundant. That belief has been challenged. Conversely, they had little power, as both Democratic and Republican politicians and entrepreneurs had been ignoring them for decades. That is why you got Trump and that is why the word 'woke' became a catchword and an umbrella term. And that is why the term 'white thrash' fell into disuse. Because it was too painfully salient.

Hey please take such posts to the Politics board, will you? I DID get carried away myself, but I'm relatively new here.

Woke was originally used as a way for people to pat themselves on the back for reading in to things, and noticing the racism. Anyone can notice overt racism, but these days most of it is subtle. If you were able to see what other people couldn’t, you were woke. That doesn’t mean racism is actually there, you can read in to anything, which is why it became a joke.

The right wing meaning of woke is when identity politics are prioritized above everything else. It’s really that simple. The left is trying really hard to pretend that they don’t understand, because they want it to be right wing version of what is a woman, but it’s not, and you know exactly what we are talking about.

As far as the original definition goes, just because you view the world through a lease of racism doesn’t mean that it’s actually there. You can see it in anything if you look hard enough. Just because people claim to be more alert than others to racism, doesn’t mean that they were right about it.

As far as the current definitions woke is racism, sexism discrimination etc. Hiring practices, or whatever we are applying this to should be based on merit, not the color of your skin, or what you have between your legs.

To your last, on a systemic level it doesn’t exist, and it’s already against the law. The only laws that legally allow discrimination, favor minorities such as affirmative action.
