Hits and Flops of the Summer So Far

Can anyone give their analysis of the summer movie season, so far, ranking the winners and losers (and perhaps an analysis of which upcoming releases they expect to be hits or flops)?

reply

Current cinema showings;

- Mario is a mega hit.
- Spider-Man is doing superb. A hit.
- Guardians of the Galaxy started of wobbly and looked in danger but great reviews have gave it a long life span. It's done well over all. A decent hit.
- Fast X is flopping, especially domestic. International return is fine but a major budget and poor domestic return are making this a flop.
- The Little Mermaid is flopping hard, it looked like an absolute disaster at the beginning but has managed to mitigate some of the losses (still heavy financial loss).
- Elemental is a major flop. Pixar are dying.
- The Flash is looking to be a major disaster. Like The Little Mermaid it could potentially mitigate some of the losses. It's a case of how badly it'll flop, not if.
- Transformers had a disastrous second weekend. It's flopping.
- The Boogeyman may crawl to a break even. A disappointment.

Indiana Jones is one of the most expensive movies of all time. It looks like a potential mega flop too.

Honestly it's the summer of the flops. It's a shitshow all around. Huge budgets are the main issue. Films costing $200-300 million and needing to make $700 million to generate profits are risky business.

reply

Thanks for the analysis.

The idea of a Keaton Batman film and a Ford Indiana Jones film flopping in the same summer makes me sad. Although I was only a kid at the time, and thus too young to see Batman 89 on the big screen, I'm still old enough to recall the summer of 89 (when I *did* see Last Crusade at the cinema). I have immense affection for these films, and it pisses me off to see modern movie execs and directors fuck them up.

I'm also sad about Elemental, and surprised about Fast X. I assumed the latter was a hit.

reply

I can't think of a single franchise that didn't turn into a mockery of itself after three films. Most of them barely make it to two.

THEY DIDN'T...THEY MADE NEW FILMS...YOUR ORIGINALS ARE UNTOUCHED.

reply

New films that are being roundly slated for the most part...

And they're fucking up the franchise, and, on occasion, ruining the entire OP by retrospectively tarnishing what came before.

As an aside, that's why I don't despise Ghostbusters 2016 as much as many (whilst still regarding it as a bad film). It's NOT canon, so it doesn't retrospectively ruin anything.

reply

NO SEQUEL RUINS ANY PREVIOUS FILM...EVER...PERIOD.

reply

I'd strongly argue that Alien 3 ruined Aliens.

reply

ONLY IF YOU WATCHED IT....DISLIKED IT....AND ARE UNABLE TO SEPERATE FILMS IN YOUR HEAD.

I LIKE ALIEN 3...CHARLES DUTTON IS HARDCORE IN THAT ONE.

reply

You're missing the point.

If Alien 3 is to be regarded as canon with Aliens, and most people do regard it as such, the film, whilst by no means bad on its *own* terms, dumps on the characters who survived Aliens, including a frickin child FFS.

reply

Not for me. Luckily, I only saw the first two. πŸ˜€

reply

NO THANK YOU...HOW ABOUT SOME POSTS FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE SEEN MOVIES SPEAKING ON THEIR OPINIONS.

reply

Eh?

People already do that.

I've seen GOTG3 and the new Spider-Verse film, and have my opinions, and hope to see Elemental when it's released in the UK (it's not out over here until July), but I can still discuss and analyse the BO/feedback for these films, because it matters in terms of the types of movies we get in future.

NO YOU ARE ASKING FOR THAT NEGATIVE IT'S GONNA FLOP...BASH ON THINGS WE HAVEN'T SEEN BULLSHIT...WE HAVE PLENTY OF THAT CRAP HERE ALREADY.

reply

On the contrary. I'm actually looking for some ray of light, and hoping some of these films have been successful, because right now, the buzz seems to be so negative, save, for perhaps, GOTG3 and Spider-Man (and of course, Mario, but that was arguably pre-summer).

There are many things I'm negative about, sometimes unreasonably so, but movies are not one of them. I'm a cinephile, and whilst BO is never a reflection of a film's quality, a healthy domestic and global BO is often a sign of a healthy and robust industry (esp. speaking as someone who still loves seeing films on the big screen, whenever possible).

reply

Yeah, this is one of those cynically engineered "just asking questions" type of troll topics. This guy doesn't even attempt to mask the deliberate baiting tactics.

reply

I'm sorry that you inferred it that way, but that wasn't my intention.

Quite honestly, I'm getting a little tired with some of the cliques on this site, who seem to feed into each other's prejudices, because this was precisely NOT what I'm doing, and kowalski, for all his smug "I'm such a hip cool guy" posturing is frankly a fucking ASSHOLE for planting that LIE in your head.

Even if my intentions were negative (and they weren't), would it even matter? I'm asking about FILMS FFS.

reply

"I'm sorry that you..." is the prefix of a disingenuous non-apology. Take responsibility for your missteps and vie to do better instead of casting blame on amorphous "other" groups.

What's stopping you from editing the original post of this topic and elaborating on the movies that you have seen thus far? Your opinion on those is suspiciously absent.

reply

I'm not sure what your issue is.

Why am I obliged to edit my thread and change it to something more to your liking? You seem to be criticising me for what the thread isn't, rather than what it is.

And 'sorry' was me being polite. I *am* sorry that you misunderstood me, but I'm not sorry for posting this harmless thread.

reply

Don't get worked up about Kowalski. What you're asking here is perfectly fine. It's normal to be interested in the box office performance of films and also the award season. It's all part of the greater movie discussions.

What films a hit, what film wins the oscar, it's all worthy discussion on a movie site.

When films flop, especially ones within a franchise/looking to start one, it's big news. When a film flops that's often all she wrote. The plans for future installments are scrapped. It's a very important part of the business. It's ultimately all about the money for most studios.

reply

FredBurroughs is now joining kowalski in his erroneous theory.

But thank you for understanding where I am coming from. πŸ‘πŸΌ

reply

Some of these dudes get annoyed when people discuss anything other than movies, then they also get annoyed when people mention anything negative or unfortunate about a movie. Many movies flop and it's worth talking about even if you're disappointed it flopped. Blade Runner 2049 flopped but I really liked it, it was a real shame it flopped. Doesn't mean we should all bury our heads over the fact.

They seem to want a 'safe space' for want of a better term. A great big 'circle jerk' of positivity. Some movies suck, some movies flop. It's part of life. Don't let them bother you, they're fools.

reply

I'm baffled, because if one visits any of the individual film boards, they're FULL of negativity.

The offence seems to be that I've somehow transferred that negativity from the individual boards to the General Discussion board, where I guess it's less easy to avoid.

But I still don't understand the complaint. My thread isn't intended to be 'negative', and there's nothing innately negative about the title thread or even my OP.

Funnily enough, I actually prefer positivity. I'd love to bask in it. But I also appreciate honest answers to honest questions, which is what *you* gave me (which is not to say you're 100% right; maybe you are, maybe you're not; but if others have a different analysis, that's what this thread is for...)

reply

A lot of these guys have no interest in the box office and actively argue based on feelings as opposed to the facts. Many of them were arguing that The Little Mermaid wasn't a flop when it's opening was very poor, truth be told the degree of flopping hasn't turned out to be as bad as it looked from the opening weekend but it's flopping nonetheless.

When discussing box office you can have celebration and mourning. As stated Spider-Man is doing very well, Mario is a huge hit, GOTG is another marvel hit (much needed after their last few films have been struggling to break even). Your thread isn't overly negative like these guys are claiming, they're just very sensitive to any perceived negativity.

The truth is a lot of these movies are grossing big figures... the issue is the production costs. Films like the upcoming Indiana Jones need to make at least $700 million to break even. That's ridiculous. That film could make $600 million worldwide, a respectable figure, but with how much it cost it would actually lose money at that gross. Hollywood really needs to keep these production costs in check.

That's what's happening to Fast X.

It's made $676,943,305 thus far. That's a lot of money, the problem is it needs to make a good $800+ to be a hit (studios recieve less from international markets than domestic, so for an international heavy film like this, especially a China reliant release, the break even point increases even further).

Of that gross $133 million is from China, they hog a huge chunk of the gross for themselves. Domestic split is 50-50, China split is often 20-80 (the 80% going to Chinese theatre chains). $133 million domestically (USA) >>>>>> $133 million from China. So on paper it's an impressive figure over all but given the production & marketing costs plus the current markets it's doing well in it's actually struggling hard.

reply

INCORRECT...THE ISSUE HERE IS NOT DISCUSSING FLOPS...THE ISSUE IS THE CALL TO PROGNOSTICATE ON WHICH FILMS WILL FLOP SIGHT UNSEEN...NEGATIVITY AND HYPOTHETICAL BULLSHIT.

reply

Well, I'm personally hoping for some positivity on that score. If someone says to me, with some degree of confidence, that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny or Barbie, is going to be a big hit, that's very cool with me. The more hits, the better, IMHO.

And it does appear, from this perspective, that Oppenheimer and the next Mission: Impossible movie should be hits.

And my hope is that the positive CinemaScores for Elemental might translate to decent long-term BO for that movie, despite the weak opening weekend.

reply

On those films;
- Barbie seems like it'll do decent.
- Oppenheimer looks like it'll be profitable.
- Mission: Impossible is also a safe bet at a profitable film.

We can't predict the future but those three do seem like potential proftiable films, one or two may even break out as a hit.

Other films yet to be released;
- The Marvels is up in the air. Could be a flop... might break even or make a small profit.
- Blue Beetle seems destined to be another DC flop.
- Aquaman 2 looks like another DC flop. The DCEU is crashing and burning on it's last lap. James Gunn has his work cut out rebooting the whole franchise.

reply

At the risk of pissing off kowalski, I'm not expecting Blue Beetle or Aquaman 2 to be hits, mostly because of the whole DCEU debacle.

As for The Marvels, I wasn't thinking of that one, because it's not out until November. Still, after GOTG3 it's possible that the MCU might have regained its mojo.

reply

BLUE BEETLE LOOKS COOL AND COULD SURPRISE US...AQUAMAN 2 DOES NOT EXCITE ME MUCH AND I HAVE A FEELING A LOT OF FOLKS FEEL THE SAME....THE MARVELS LOOKS COOL AND THE GURADIANS ALWAYS KICK SOME LIFE INTO THE MCU...I AM VERY HOPEFUL FOR THAT ONE.

reply

'I'm not expecting Blue Beetle or Aquaman 2 to be hits'

Tbh, I'm not sure WB/DC are, either.

HE IS A SMALL TROLL...YOU ARE A BIG FUCKING TROLL...MAKES SENSE YOU TWO FUCKS THINK ALIKE.😘

Damn when I saw this comment I thought you were calling me the smart one, I'm the 'big fucking' one? Ouch.

reply

I don't think he was calling either of us 'smart'...

But yeah, I'm sorry that you're apparently the 'big troll' in this scenario. I'll take 'small troll'. 😁

reply

It's late and I'm drinking. Thought he called you a smart troll (still not so sure he didn't, he may have edited it).

Not sure what makes you small and me big. πŸ˜•

reply

I was gonna say, because you've been around longer to piss him off, but I see that you've posted much less than me, so maybe I'm confused.

For some reason, I assumed you were a MC veteran. Or maybe you are, and you don't spend your whole life here, like some of us have done.

I had a previous account and he got offended at me ogling women and calling out a pal of his who consistently makes pedophillic comments.

Those are my only crimes, the latter I contend to being in the right, to be fair though I'm prone to heterosexual male shenanigans and am prone to objectifying women so he has a point on the first issue.

ALLABY HAS SPENT THE LAST I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG FUCKING WITH YOUR POINTY LITTLE HEAD ALONG WITH OTHERS...DID IT NEVER EVEN ONCE OCCUR TO YOU THAT HIS COMMENTS WERE ALWAYS RIGHT ON THE LINE AND RIGHT OUT IN YOUR FACE?....REPEATEDLY...YOU HONESTLY THOUGHT YOU WERE THE MOVIECHAT PEDOPHILE BUSTER?...BRO...NOBODY HATES PEDOS MORE THAN I DO...YOU KNOW HOW I AM ABOUT WOMEN AND PEOPLE IN GENERAL...PROBLEM IS...THERE ISN'T A PEDOPHILE...JUST A MIDDLE AGED CINEPHILE WHO ENJOYS WINDING UP DENSE FUCKS WITH A DARK BLACK SENSE OF HUMOR.

MY "PAL" SURE GOT DEEP IN YOUR CRANIUM...WHICH IS HILARIOUS AND KIND OF SAD.🫀

reply

You complain of trolls yet you celebrate a man who, according to yourself, pretends to be a pedophile to get a rise out of others.

Keep that same anti-troll energy when speaking of Allaby. He's either a pedo or trolls by pretending to be one which is one of the sickest troll acts you can pull, much worse than some users on here who poke fun at a film flopping, which is what you're accusing HarveyManFredSin of doing in this thread.

I'll take the "ha this movie is flopping" over a "I love little girls" troll any time.

reply

ALLABY EARNED HIS TRUST...BE BEING GENUINE,FORTHCOMING AND HONEST FOR A GOOD DEAL OF TIME...MAKING HIS RECENT CHOICE OF TROLL JOB FAIRLY AMUSING TO ME...HE NEVER SAYS A SINGLE WORD THAT IS OVER THE LINE...LEAVING THE LESSER BEINGS TO PAINT IN THE NASTY WITH THEIR OWN WRECKED THOUGHTS.
