Does Anyone Exercise When They're Ill?

I'm really under the weather right now. I've got a cold and my body temperature is running hot and cold, and I've had to change my pillows, because they're drenched with sweat.

Anyway, I've not been able to go to the gym or really do any exercise, and it bugs me because it means I'm losing fitness, and potentially putting on weight, in the meantime.

Is anyone able to exercise when they're feeling sick, and what exercises would you suggest?

reply

If you're sick to the point where you're sweating bullets in bed I don't think you'll be putting on any weight. Your calorie intake shouldn't be that high because most people can't eat when they are sick in bed.

reply

I hope you're right, but my hunger hasn't completely gone, and, alas, at my age, I tend to lose weight in the wrong places (not that I've ever been overweight/large, but I do wish my lower-torso was more toned, which is partly why I'm so eager to get back to the gym).

reply

No. Rest is exercise when you are ill. You body needs to focus on healing. Also no one at the gym wants to catch your bug, so if you do exercise go for a walk or a run outside.

reply

Agreed about the gym. I don't want to go in this state, but even if I did have the urge, I certainly wouldn't risk passing my germs to anyone else. I was asking about what I can do whilst I'm stuck at home.

reply

I have an exercise bike at home, which is a great help when I’m recovering. I also have a set of dumbbells for gentle stuff.

Your body will tell you when it’s ready to return to the gym.

reply

Stay at home and rest. Don't be an idiot and spread your germs at the gym.

Signed, million man.

People keep lecturing me about not going to the gym. With all due respect, where did I even hint that I was going to the gym? The whole point of my question is that I'm not, and have no intention of, going to the the gym.

reply

I wasn't lecturing you. I hope you do the right thing. That is all.

I'm no doctor but I did play one in a straight to DVD movie (technically I was a rocket-surgeon) but I knows that rest is the best medicine when you're sick.

Take it easy, hydrate, take Tylenol to keep your fever in check and stay off social media as it was only aggravate you.

reply

I'm mentally ill, and addicted to (certain) social media.

I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't take drugs, I'm not a sex/onanism addict, I don't stuff my face with junk food, I don't gamble, I don't play video games. *THIS* is my addiction. Maybe if I was feeling better, I could do something more constructive, like work or exercise.

reply

Books are nice. Find a big fat one and get lost in it while you recover.

reply

Or a big fat Doobie. It can do wonders.

reply

You shouldn’t exercise when you are sick.

reply

LOL! I'm not. I just worry how bad my fitness will decline whilst I'm convalescing.

Since COVID, I've been having more frequent bouts of illness, whereas prior to 2020, I'd go for years without so much as a cold.

reply

I can only join the consensus here and tell you to take it easy until your fever has been gone for 24 hours.
