Bed Bath & Beyond files for bankruptcy: Name a favorite company that went out of business.

I noted on another thread that I visited BB&B yesterday and it was almost completely empty of customers...then I read this today. It made me sad because I always loved to peruse BB&B, they have lots of interesting merchandise. Of course, it is not completely out of business just yet. But it doesn't look good.

I'll add Virgin Megastore to the list. It still exists, but nothing like its former self. It has a dozen or so locations in the United Arab Emirates. That's it. I get it, sales of CDs and DVDs plummeted. But I loved to spend an hour at my local Megastore in NYC, the one in Union Square.

“It has a dozen or so locations in the United Arab Emirates.”

Seems like a long way to go.

I loved Virgin Megastore...fond memories. Do you have a fave that went bankrupt or otherwise went out of business?

reply

It’s always sad when something iconic disappears, but I can’t say I really miss anything.

Had to look that one up...sort of reminds me of Borders Books...another now-defunct store that I loved.

HASTINGS WAS AN EXCELLENT STORE...I TOO MISS THAT ONE.

Woolworths, aka the “five and dime”. I remember the one in my hometown. It had a lunch counter with red swivel chairs. Rows and rows of notions and doodads.

reply

I remember the five and dime, the one nearest me in the 1960s was H.L. Green. I suppose the equivalent today would be the 99¢ or $1 store...but I think you will agree with me they are not quite the same.

reply

I remember Woolworth’s. There was also a Woolco which was owned by the same company but I think the stores were larger.

Similar stores I remember were Kress and McCrory’s.

reply

We had a Woolworths with a lunch counter in Yonkers!
Good burgers and hot dogs, us kids would get excited whenever mom and nanny needed to go shopping lol!!!

Similar to Virgin, Tower Records was a powerhouse of brick and mortar media, with a robust selection of unrivaled variety. It still maintains an online presence, but gone are the iconic locations.

Also it was a shame to see Radio Shack fizzle out when it shifted focus away from electronics components to retail consumer electronics in order to compete with the likes of Best Buy. I got a lot of stuff on super discounted clearance when they closed, though, so silver linings.

Suncoast video

I remember that store. Good store.

Too bad, a lot of jobs lost yet again!

My wife always considered BBnB overpriced but she’d get a lot of coupons in the mail and go there.

I love Amazon but I suspect Amazon is killing off these smaller concerns.

Fast, cheap and easy…shame on me but here we are.

I know what she means...if I was looking at an expensive knife or coffee maker, I told myself to check around for a better price.

THE DEVIL IN A GRAY VAN.

If I see a strange Van on the street I’m loading my shotguns and .35 lever action rifle.

Tell the fucking Feds and Indians that this is my goddam land now and they will be buried under it.

I’ve got plenty of ammo and a shovel.

If it's a white van don't buy the loudspeakers

Jumbo Video was a Canadian video store back in the 90s. They served popcorn while you searched through their selection of films.

Nice touch.

CompUSA. I miss the days walking through of rows and rows of big box PC games.

reply

Oh yes. I miss software stores like Egghead. Loved to browse the games back in the day. Places like GameStop are just not the same. Tiny selection of PC games.
