Name a bad performance in a good film

First one that comes to mind is Keanu Reeves in Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Love the guy. Not a good actor but he tries. He was truly awful in Dracula though

reply

I thought he did a fine job.

reply

It was too much to ask him to do a generally ‘English’ accent.
I also really like the guy but damn that was hilariously bad lol.

reply

fuck em gay ass english accents, aint nobody wanna hear that shit...

reply

I truly enjoy the various English accents although I need subtitles to understand a lot of them lol!

America has some difficult accents to figure out as well, but all of this accent stuff is pretty interesting to me.

reply

Scottish is cool, the ghetto English accents sound alright but the proper shit sounds so frickin gay

reply

I feel like his wooden and awkward acting worked ok given his the stuffy nature of his character. Probably not intentional though.

reply

I second that sentiment (fine job)

reply

STAR WARS (1977) has horrible acting throughout, but harrison ford is especially bad

reply

Really? I thought Harrison Ford gave one of the better performances in Star Wars, besides Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing.

reply

ive always thought he was bad in it, but yes i know im in the minority opinion, lol

reply

For me it was Mark Hamill.

reply

fair enough, carrie fisher didnt exactly nail it either, lol

Cameron Diaz - Gangs of New York

reply

She's usually good but I agree. She was really miscast

reply

Leo wasn't great either.

reply

I like Leo, I thinks he's an excellent actor, but he wasn't good in Gangs of New York.

reply

It wasn't a good film (which is why I hesitated agreeing with your first comment; Cameron Diaz was bad, but arguably, so was everyone else, including even the otherwise peerless Daniel Day-Lewis). It's probably my least favourite Scorsese feature film (which admittedly still places it above *most* filmmakers' worst).

reply

I agree with this statement, the introduction was cheesy and seemed super fake. didnt see much more of the film

reply

Even though she was nominated for an Oscar, I have absolutely no idea what Michelle Williams was doing in "The Fabelmans".

reply

I haven't seen the film yet, but I thought she was odd casting to play Spielberg's *Jewish* mother.

reply

She's terrible not matter the religion. She was acting on a completely different page than everyone else.

reply

This may be an unpopular opinion but I do not like Marlon Brando in Apocalypse Now. I love the rest of the film but Brando was just too bizarre at the end.

I also don’t like Danny Nucci in Titanic but then again I haven’t liked him in anything I’ve seen him in.

reply

I also don’t like Danny Nucci in Titanic

I will neva forgetchu!

reply

Now, these are picks I can get behind.

I ADORE Apocalypse Now. It's one of my ALL-TIME favourite films, and for my money, superior to Coppola's Godfather movies, and by the type we get to the whole Kurtz sequence with Brando, the film has already won its stripes as a confirmed classic (which is just as well, because the final fifteen minutes or so are a bit more a slog to get through, partly because of Brando's mumbling, self-indulgent performance). I think Brando's casting was perfect; I just think he works better as a mythical figure in a photo, in this case, than when we actually finally meet him.

And although I hadn't really thought of it much before, I think you're right about Nucci in Titanic. It's a great movie (albeit not the masterpiece that Apocalypse Now is, but nevertheless, a highly entertaining watch, and a piece of virtuoso filmmaking on James Cameron's part), but the performances are variable. I also really dislike Jason Barry as Leo's Irish friend, Tommy. In fact, I had to look him up to see if he's done anything else of any note (it appears not; although he is a Man United supporter, which probably explains the bad vibes he gives me), and I was surprised to find he is genuinely Irish, because I always assumed he was some dude from California trying *really hard* to seem like a bolshy Irish stereotype.

reply

I love the movie "Hoosiers" and think it's a great movie.

However, as great as I think the movie is, I think Barbara Hershey was really miscast. I'm hesitant to criticize Hershey too much, because I think the issue may have been the way her character was written, instead of her performance.

Having said that...I just don't think she was convincing as a "Midwestern farm girl." And she didn't have any "romantic chemistry" with Gene Hackman, IMO. I think a different actress could have made this movie even better. Just my $.02.

reply

I read her as a high-backed midwestern farm girl. Proud, very high-minded & starchy, nobody's fool, wary, independent. A bit suspicious & protective of her family, community & self. There are people like that. It added a nice bit of tension in the drama, between the two of them.

Interesting choice, though. It was not your usual facile 'romantic' interaction. But these were two mature adults, both with pasts. It seemed to me, real.

reply

Fair enough...I get what you are saying here. She definitely wasn't your typical "damsel in distress that needed saving" character. I love this movie primarily because of the basketball scenes, though...if you're of a certain age and played high-school basketball, then I think it really tends to resonate with that person.

Also, I read something years back on Gene Hackman (who's one of my favorite actors...although there are a lot of movies of his I haven't seen). The writer said that Hackman had never really had a convincing on-screen romance. It's an interesting point, IMO.

I think this is one of the great things about the movies...how two people can see the same thing on screen and come away with two different viewpoints. I don't mean in a "right and wrong way"...I think that's part of the power that movies and TV shows have. They can mean different things to different people.

Tuesday Weld in "Falling Down". Granted, her role wasn't really developed & written well but her performance was just terrible.
