Bands where replacement members served longer than "classic line up" members?

The first one that comes to mind is Motorhead, Campbell and Dee were with the band longer than Filthy Animal Taylor and Fast Eddie Clark.

Hugh McDonald has been in Bon Jovi longer than original bassist Alec John Such.

Ronnie Wood has been with the Stones longer than Brian Jones was.

Steve Howe replaced Peter Banks in Yes. Banks was only in the band for two years.

reply

You could do a whole ‘Rock’ family tree with Yes, lol.

reply

Steve Morse has been in Deep Purple longer than Ritchie Blackmore was by now.....or is pretty close to it.

reply

Fleetwood Mac and their numerous incarnations.

reply

How has no one mentioned Bruce Dickinson yet?

reply

He has been in Iron Maiden longer than the previous singer Paul Di'Anno. I can't help but think Bruce would be considered part of the "classic" line up though rather than Di'Anno. Number of the Beast would be ultimate Maiden member wise.

reply

Bruce Dickinson yet

reply

Finally you're at my level of humour.

reply

Don’t call me Finally

reply

Well, I was going to call you a lot worse. But "a lot worse" is too long to be a name.

reply

I’ve been called worse.

Another one just came to mind;

Metallica

Kirk Hammet replaced original Lead Guitarist Dave Mustaine

Rob Trujillo is their longest serving Bass player now (20 years) outlasting the 3 before him combined (Jason Newsted, Cliff Burton, & original bassist Ron McGovney)

reply

Good one. Newstead's backing vocals especially on Creeping Death will always be legendary though.

reply

Alice in Chains.

William DuVall has been the singer longer now than Layne Staley.

Kiss.

Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer have been in the band longer than Ace Frehley and Peter Criss.

And another:

Riot (....no not Quiet Riot!) now known as Riot V. No original members now, & none that played on their first five albums. Currently the two longest serving members joined in 1986, & 1988. There's been 25 members since their formation in 1975.

I've heard those guys before, I love that classic late 70's/early 80's metal sound and their cheesy album covers complete with cheesy mascot.

reply

I never understood why they didn't break through on a more national scale.

They seemed to be like an East Coast equivelent of (west coast) Y&T: popular & well respected in the metal scene(s) in their respective home base, but never caught on outside them.

reply

Alice Cooper band, everyone seems to have served longer than the members in the 70's asides from Alice himself.
