What are your thoughts on Adam Sandler?
He's alright. I remember his 90s comedy movies like "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore". A solid Jewish comedian.

I always found him to be just meh but I was blown away by his performance in Uncut Gems. His acting really took me by surprise there.
shareYeah he’s ok, I watched some of his comedies and chuckled but have enjoyed his dramatic work more.
But
Why’sitgottabeJewish?? 🥯🤔
There's a tradition of Jewish stage comedy. It's not a putdown.
shareNO IT ISN'T...BUT THE OP CLEARLY DROPPED THE WORD JEWISH INTO HIS POST STRATEGICALLY.
shareAdam Sandler is very much in the tradition of Jewish slapstick comedy.

Did I say it was a putdown?
It is, however, as clunky as fuck and sounds as odd as saying Dolly Parton is a solid Christian musician of that Rishi Sunak is a solid Hindu politician.
No, that's my point. My first job I worked with some 70-year-old man who used to be a stand-up comedian. He was Jewish. And he always referred to it as a sort of Jewish stage circuit. He'd talk about hanging out with Don Rickles and Shecky Greene, those guys. It's a Hollywood tradition and it's very ethnic. It's rooted in a Jewish tradition of humor.
It's nothing like saying Dolly Parton is a Christian singer because there was no ethnic comedy club circuit among "Christians" of which she was a part. And we're really talking here about the Ashkenazi, not the Jewish religion.
So what exactly is it about Sandler’s comedy that makes it specifically Jewish?
shareBecause there is a tradition of Jewish stand-up comedy of which he was a part. He started in stand-up, doing small clubs.
shareThere’s also a tradition of Jewish people working in the film industry, and I would think it just as curious if someone described Stanley Kubrick as a solid Jewish director.
shareNah, it's really different. We're not talking about big production here. It's all based on a small club circuit. There's also a lot of Yiddish humor involved. You have to know ethnic Ashkenazi people to get what I'm saying.
shareNo, we’re talking about Adam Sandler here, and I don’t know if there’s many people who would associate him with the Jewish stand-up circuit rather than the film work for which he is best known.
shareI grew up around Jewish folks.
Huh? This is so obvious it's not even debatable. You don't associate this with being Jewish?:
Adam Sandler's Chanukah Song:

The crowd is obviously Jewish and they 'get it'. Stop trying to make something anti-Semitic about it. It's ethnic comedy.
Again, you’re assuming I took it as a putdown or an anti-semetic remark, which I didn’t.
It just sounds weird to me and no amount of you espousing your intricate knowledge of the Jewish comedy community is likely to change that.
Yeah, because singing about Chanukah, playing Jewish characters in films like The Wedding Singer and Zohan, et al, makes him Buddhist.
I have no intricate knowledge of Jewish comedy. And I don't like Sandler. But he's Jewish and he's never tried to hide it. It's part of his identity. Not one thing wrong with calling him Jewish.
🙄
Ok Onan can’t be wrong, I get it!
What did you think of his solid Jewish performance in Happy Gilmore??
IDK if he was explicitly Jewish in that movie. But the script borrowed heavily from Caddyshack, a movie about an uncouth Jewish outsider stepping on the toes of uptight WASPs.
It's not an insult. It's who he is.

Exactly. In general conversation, I would never refer to Sandler as "a Jewish comedian". But if one does, as the OP did, I understand perfectly why. The actor carries over his "Jewishness" to many of his roles.
shareDUDE...THE OP SAID JEWISH TO STIR SHIT...YOU JUMPED RIGHT IN TO KEEP IT SPINNING...BE BETTER.
shareWhy do you think there is something wrong with calling a Jewish man "Jewish"?
Sandler has made a career of exploring Jewishness. The Chanukah song is his theme. He's made several films about the Jewish experience. This is a thread about Sandler. Not a damn thing wrong with citing his Jewish heritage. It helps explain his career.
And why not "spin it"? It helps us understand Adam Sandler.
THE OP SAID WHAT THEY SAID TO INSPIRE THIS CONVERSATION...YOU SUCK AS MUCH AS HE DOES.
shareI GREW UP ON SANDLER...AND OTHER THAN THE CHANUKAH SONG...DUDE DOESN'T THROW OUT MUCH JEWISH ANYTHING.
shareYou Don't Mess With the Zohan is comedy genius!
shareI like him when he plays humble characters. The Wedding Singer and Mr. Deeds are probably my favorite movies of his.
sharei think there's a mediocre comedian with a LOT of connections
sharePeople actually think about Adam Sandler. Christ.... SMDH.
shareI think overall his movies are hit or miss. He seems cool as a person. Of the movies I've seen -

I thought he was funny in a couple of things, but if the only thing I knew about a movie was that he was in it - I'd skip it because he is an obnoxious bore in most cases.
I remember liking "Big Daddy" and "Punch Drunk Love". I'm thinking "Spanglish" was not bad.
Then there was that horrible stupid thing with Jennifer Aniston,
Zohan was not funny.
