What's the most you would pay for a watch?

I've never been an extravagant person and always lean towards being frugal, but sometimes its nice to have nice things, right? I want to upgrade from my Citizen Eco-Drive and have been eyeing an Oris, but that's gonna cost a lot of cheese!

A wristwatch is the only jewelry that a true gentleman can wear, so they are priced in the tens of thousands of dollars, like Lucien Pickard and Patek Philippe. None of you has a clue. The overwhelming majority of people will not recognize these status symbols, nor should they. They are not meant for you.

What kind of watch do you have?

reply

You assume too much.

It depends. Am I Roger Federer

I have a 30 euro watch now but would spend up to 200. For that you should be able to buy one that has the looks that you want. If you spend more than that you're just doing it because you want something expensive.

reply

Lots of good watches for around $200. I think that's about what I spent on my Citizen Eco-Drive. You could get a nice Seiko too in that price range.

reply

i like digital watches myself but most are unfortunately very ugly :(

reply

Nothing. I can't wear one.

reply

You could always get a pocket watch.

reply

Yes I've got one of those but they are a hassle to carry around and I never use it. They might be okay in cold climates where you've always got plenty of pockets to put one in but in Australia they're not really practical most of the time.

It's no big deal because I'm retired and I've got a wall clock, the computer has a clock and the car has a clock so I'm pretty well catered for in the telling the time department.

reply

I solved the issue of pockets with a purse.

What oris? I'm curious.

The only thing is mechanical watches need to be wound, don't keep accurate time to the second and need to be serviced every 4 years, costing about $500.

I WAS considering this one, but after doing a little research last night, I'm going with a Longines Spirit instead.

Most of these watches are automatic and self wind with the natural motion of the users arm. Not sure I'd buy one I'd have to manually wind.

To answer your other question, my Citizen is model BM6835-15E in all black with a black nato watchband.

reply

The Oris is really nice...I think I like it better than the Longines

reply

A few hundred dollars cheaper, too. I'm in no rush, so maybe my mind will flip flop again. I'm going to try and check out both in person.

reply

I got a 20 dollar watch as a gift for my 18 birthday. Two decades later it still works great and i love it. If it broke i may even buy the same model.

reply

Awesome. I wish I still had my watch from back then. I remember losing it swimming at the quarry.

reply

I bought my current casino watch for around $70 & I've had it for the past 5-6 years.
