Singers or bands you are sad didn’t make it in the long run

Artists and bands who had one or two great albums or songs and then fizzled.

For me

Savage Garden
Rob Thomas.

I loved both and thought they had potential to be great stars with really long careers but disappeared to soon

School of Fish

Probably best known for the rock radio hit "3 Strange Days", they were stuck with a record label that didn't know how to market their music in the grunge era & broke up after only 2 albums. The lead guitarist went on to join The Wallflowers, & the lead singer tried to get a solo career going (producing 2 really good albums) that unfortunately went nowhere before he tragically died from an aggressive form of cancer at the too young age of 33.

simply red loved his voice and of course INXS

While I'm sad at what happened to INXS and Michael Hutchence, they had a pretty good run for at least a decade. FYI, "Don't Change" was the very first video I ever saw on MTV and it's probably still my favorite song from them (although I love the guitar work on "Devil Inside").

reply

INXS had a very long run 1977-2012, but I guess if you aren't Australian it might seem like less depending on when you started to notice them.

After Hutchence died they tried replacing him and still had some success but it was never going to work for long. It's a shame for the Farris brothers who actually did the song writing, they just had a very enigmatic singer who stole the show.

Going old school with this...The Bobby Fuller Four. Had one of the greatest songs ever written with "I Fought The Law" and that was it.

I've always thought Hollywood should've made a movie about Bobby Fuller...from what I've read and heard, the consensus is that he didn't really commit suicide, but was murdered. A real shame...wonder how many hits Fuller would've had if he had lived.

If Phil Mogg and Michael Schenker could have kept it together (more Schenker's fault), they would have taken the world by storm.

reply

They were a headliner act for most of their career, & still made some good albums w/o Schenker.

reply

They maybe headlined second tier venues but they never achieved superstar status. The post Schenker albums were decent, but they didn't live up to Schenker's brilliance. I saw them in 1978, with Schenker and it was life changing.

reply

Savage Garden was a song writing duo, not a band.

reply

Wow, nobody has mentioned the Beatles.

1969 to 1980, when Lenon died, represents 11 years of missed opportunity.

Given how their sound evolved with the times, I'd love to know how the 70s would have influenced their creativity.

reply

But McCartney (with Wings), Harrison (especially, IMO), Lennon, and Ringo put out some great music during that time period, so I think it all worked out for the best.

reply

They individually had a few hits here and there.

The Beatles

I wonder what happened to them since we don't hear much from them anymore.
Too bad because I really thought they had something to make it big.
