Do you think the Arts should receive Government funding ?

The Australian Government has just announced nearly $300 million in funding for the "Yartz".

I'm in favour of funding the so called high Arts like symphony orchestras and even the Ballet ( although I personally don't like Ballet ). But I draw the line at funding a bunch of no talent bums so they can produce their "improvisational theatre" and their "installations".

Only if it can make the country profit.

It’s the perfect government program:

Step 1- fund the arts
Step 2- ???
Step 3- profit

I mean something like Cirque de Soleil, not small community programs.

Yes! Museums, fine artists for public works (ex. sculptures in the parks), musicians for free public performances, etc.. I know other countries fund movies to promote their countries film industry, too.

it's leftist elitist nonsense, let's tax people who actually work for a living and give something to people so they can study 16th century peruvian mosiacs.

but yeah, the left is for the working people. totally...

there's no shortage of young people with arts degrees who can't get jobs. very few people make it in the arts field. we do have plenty of job openings in healthcare, tech and skilled trades.

Yes.

Yes. I wish the American government would shift some of the billions it's throwing away on wars we never win, and reinvest in the country.

Also, samoanjoes, community forums can use the funding.

Again, trillions are wasted on killing people in Asia. A few hundred million is a drop in the bucket.

I disagree with it as there are more important things to spend money on. Also the Govt is only going to fund art projects it agreed with politically which means more SJW art.

reply

Yes.
Every now and then there will be something silly that people who like to be outraged will get outraged about but generally it's for the greater good. I like ballet & opera & Shakespeare and if it takes extra funding to get those out to the sticks and into schools then I think it's money well spent. It also supports the small stuff - which even if it looks amateurish and bit rubbish could well be the first steps for some peoples career and is a satisfying community activity for the others.
Plus, every now and then someone produces figures to show that as an investment it returns it's value several times over in the UK's TV and Film industry and the tourist attracting Theatres - so you can justify in purely economic terms.
