Root canal treatment

I know this is not the place to seek for medical advice, but pretty much nothing scares me more than going to the dentist, so I guess I'm just looking for some encouragement.

I fell down on my bicycle a while ago and messed up my front tooth pretty badly. I've never had root canal treatment before, but now they have to do it to try and save my tooth. This honestly stresses and scares me like hell. To the point that I have trouble sleeping.

To the people that have had it done, is it painful..?

I've had one and they're not nearly as bad as they used to be. Dentistry and pain control have come a long way.

First: if you can do anything to keep the tooth in your head, do it!

Second: you won’t feel pain, but be aware you may feel some anxiety. They fill your mouth up with a rubber mask to isolate the tooth in question. I know that this can can feel claustrophobic.

Third: ask what painkiller they are using. It may be sodium pentothal. It’s a very effective pain killer. It is also Truth Serum. You may not want to have a parent or lover drive you home after the procedure. “Mom, Bobby is SO FUCKING HUGE! His dick pokes out my asshole!”

no drug would ever make me say that.

As one who has had a root canal procedure, consider it a blessing compared to the pain generated by the damage done from the actual agony produced from an actual injury via a genuine tooth root injury. I had my oral surgeon open office hours extra early (~7AM) in order to have the procedure done before I could go back to work. Can't recommend you adjust your mental focus towards the literal relief it generates vs. the false pain "common knowledge" it indicates.

I hate those dang rubber dams. Anyone had those on during the root canal?
