you have to make the trip to carson city.

reply

I would like to some day. I have chosen a no-car lifestyle which means a bus. Reno runs an inter-city bus to C.C. (takes about an hour) so it is definitely doable.

reply

I've been looking (puns apropos in this response) at that option very closely myself lately, since I just had cataract surgery on one eye today; very interesting experience. I was told that was all that was needed to pass the eye exam for the DMV. I'm a lifelong driver and don't feel ready to give that up just yet.

reply

Being originally from NYC, I'm used to it :)

reply

reno is closer to san francisco than it is to las vegas.

reply

Oh, yes. Much closer. Half. 220 miles vs 440. Prior to Raiders/Knights locals here were 49ers and Sharks fans. More Giants fans than A's I think. The capital of California, Sacramento, is a little more than half way between Reno and SF.

reply

Yes to having been on a cruise, no to everything else.

So, who is the person you hit an autograph from?

reply

There are two in particular that would probably qualify as "famous"...one is Art Schlichter, the former Ohio State quarterback who wrecked his life due to gambling/fraud. I asked for (and got) his autograph back in 1981 after the Ohio State-Northwestern game. I really thought it would be worth something one day...but not for the reason(s) it ended up being.

Second is Dirk Benedict, the actor from The A-Team (which was how I remembered him...I loved that show growing up), Battlestar Galactica, etc. A former co-worker of mine said that she could get me an autograph from him if I asked, so I said, "Sure." I ended up getting a signed picture of him...but I had to pay $20 to get it! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ I did pay the $20 and, somewhere in my house, I have a signed picture of Dirk Benedict as a result.

reply

Dirk Benedict was pretty popular in those days and it makes me wonder where he went to after that because I really canโ€™t recall him in much else. Iโ€™ll have to look him up.

reply

I just remembered one more that would qualify. Back in the early 1980s, the singer Juice Newton performed at our county fair and, after the show, I was able to get her autograph. I had forgotten about that one...she was very nice to me (I was probably around 11 or 12, so that would put it around 1980-1981).

reply

That must have been around the time of her Queen of Hearts days. I think that song was even popular on the pop charts as well as country.

reply

Yes...actually, her big song at that time was "Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me" (she saved that one for last), so it may have been 1982 when she played. It was funny...at one point in her show, she was talking in between songs about the song that was her "big break" and we thought it was going to be "Queen Of Hearts," but it wasn't. It was her cover of "Angel In The Morning."

I think "Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me" might have been her last big hit. I believe she actually got married and left the music business altogether not long afterward...I don't think she was very happy about having to play at our county fair (She was a fairly big star at the time). But she was very nice to me when I asked for and got her autograph.

reply

I looked Juice Newton up on the Internet after making my post...turns out I was wrong about a lot of it. I was thinking she got married and left the music business...she did get married, but it sounds like she never really did leave the music business. And she did have a couple of other hits after "Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me." Funny how the mind can play tricks on a person when they get older! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
