What is the longest distance you have walked in a day?
Four miles would be the most for me. I read that Charles Dickens would regularly walk twelve miles in a day.

The day I got suspended for smoking and tried to hide it I got dropped off at my school then walked to my friends house about 4 miles away and he wasn't home so I walked to White Castle about 2 miles away then a mile down the road to the big High School as I went to Alternative school and they had a half day, met up with some friends and got on the bus and walked about a mile to our old Middle School and the French teacher was doing Fondue and Crepes day and let us stay after that we all walked a mile down the road to my best friends house just 5 houses down from me and his parents were pricks so they came home and we all had to go out the window and all these idiots came running into the room knocking into each other and knocked me out of the window where I nearly broke my arm, then from there I walked to the other big high school to try to meet up with my friend before he got on his bus about 6 miles away but I missed him and ended up walking all the way to his house which was like another 10 miles down the road and I got there and they had said the jig was up. My parents were looking for me because the teacher who busted me smoking had seen me enter and leave the school in the morning and made a call so I say at my friend's house waiting to be picked up and that's how my folks found out I smoked.
shareThat's quite a story!
shareI do quite a bit of hiking. We did part of the Great Divide Trail in 2021 and averaged 22 kms a day. Some days not as much with elevation gain. When I was younger and not sick, I did some hiking in the alps and we did about 30kms a day. I think one flat day we did 40km, but that was almost 30 years ago, and that doesn't sound as fun now.
shareI used to go mountain climbing with my uncle as a boy in Germany. I've done a lot of long distance walking in my life and was also a cross-country distance runner for almost 20 years. I once worked a 2nd shift job for a large manufacturing company in one community, while living in another, 25 miles away. One Friday evening, I decided I wanted to get the hell out of there, go home early and get a jump on my weekend. I started out hitchhiking, which was unsuccessful, and ended up walking that trip. It took me all night. For several hours, I was on a two-lane, back country road and it was pitch black out there. I hit the city limits of my town at daybreak, enjoyed several beers when I got home, slept like a baby for hours, then had an enjoyable rest of the weekend.π
shareThat's a long walk. I know our 40 km day took over 8 hours, but at least we were on a trail where we didn't have to worry about cars hitting us, and it was also daylight.
I don't think I could walk 40 kms in a day anymore, but I think that's just due to health and just no desire, and then I think of that guy who ran a marathon (42.2kms) every day in 2022 and wonder where my motivation is. Then I saw a meme the other day which said "Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person". So yeah, maybe I'm doing okay.
I used to hitchhike a lot in my younger days. I actually traveled from California back to Kansas that way when I was only 16, so I guess I was a bit overconfident that evening about getting a ride. I started out on I-70 then switched over to that 2-lane back road and started walking. I passed occasional farms along the way and was hoping some farmer's dog running loose wouldn't suddenly come at me from out of the darkness.π§π
A favorite song from my youth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFredbE3goM
You βused to doβ a lot of stuff according to your boring yarns but what do you now fool?
shareI NEVER CALCULATED IT...BUT A LOT...FOR A TIME IN MY 20'S I WAS SEMI OMELESS AND COLLECTED RECYCLABLES TO GET SHIT GOING AGAIN...I LITERALLY WALKED ALL DAY EVERY DAY COLLECTING AND HAULING EVERY CAN AND BOTTLE I COULD FIND FROM EVERY DUMPSTER,TRASHCAN,GUTTER...WHEN THAT CHAPTER BEGAN I WEIGHED CLOSE TO 400 POUNDS...BY THE TIME I SAVED ENOUGH TO CLIMB BACK INTO A HUMAN EXISTANCE I WAS 180 POUNDS...WHICH WAS REAL LEAN AT 6'6".
share20+ miles. Been a few years now because I don't live in the same area and all the walks around here top out in the 10-15 mile range.
