Buffalo Bills player requires CPR after on-field collapse

Incredible situation in Cincinnati. Bills safety Damar Hamlin makes an ordinary looking tackle, stands up and immediately collapses. Medical staff goes out to check on him and he’s not breathing. They spend 20 mins on the field giving him CPR before rushing him into an ambulance on the field. Hamlin’s family was at the game. The players are in shock and head coaches took them to their locker rooms, suspending the game which I think is unprecedented

reminds me of the detroit red wings player juri fischer who collapsed and survived but never played again. let's hope for the best.

reply

What was it in that scenario? Heart issue?

reply

Ventricular tachycardia i think it was.

It makes me wonder if athletes, be they high school, college, or professional, should have more thorough testing for heart conditions before they can participate in sports. We've all heard about undiagnosed heart conditions that have killed athletes in the past. I believe we have the technology to do so.

reply

Very scary. There is a trend in athletes dropping dead lately. So sad and weird.

reply

Here’s the video and I just don’t see anything unusual about the tackle. Very scary

reply

Neither do I, so it makes me wonder if he would have collapsed without the tackle.

reply

Players are out of their pads and equipment staff is on the field packing up. Still awaiting official word. The entire stadium is still packed with spectators

reply

NFL just terminated the game. Reports are that Hamlin is in critical condition at the hospital

reply

Athletes have collapsed and died before, but it is usually at the high school or college level.

Years ago, California collage basketball star Hank Gathers was leading the nation in scoring and rebounding. But he had a heart condition and kept reducing or not taking his medication. He collapsed on the court, was taken to a hospital and died.

The NFL has been improving the helmets, which were an absolute joke decades ago.

reply

Scary. I hope he's okay.

reply

Prayers for Hamlin. 🙏 I was on the phone with my brother and sister...they were watching the game and told me about it. Just an awful situation.

It kind of reminds me of one of the Cincinnati Reds' Opening Days years ago when umpire John McSherry collapsed on the field and eventually died. I believe that game was postponed as well.

reply

I have to say, the NFL appeared to have a contingency plan and coordinated with players and teams and officials in making a careful but expedited decision which was creditable. Let’s hope the best for Hamlin and that there are not unintended consequences of equal magnitude for spectators and workers abruptly sent out with the game terminating 10 minutes into the first quarter

reply

What unintended consequences of equal magnitude could that possibly be?

reply

I was thinking about fans departing still under the influence having not had the benefit of the NFL-required BAC-mitigating fourth quarter moratorium on alcohol sales. Pure speculation but, unintended consequences are always magnified when 65,000 people are involved.

reply

A valid point about alcohol consumption; however, if someone is shit faced at the end of the 3rd quarter, then they most definitely won't be OK to drive at the end of the game either.

reply

Agreed. I don’t doubt however that some personal-injury victim (or even the drunk jackass who injuries himself) would mention my point in a lawsuit against the stadium if there was such an accident following the removal of fans in the first quarter. Hopefully it didn’t happen but, the statute of limitations is probably several years
