Have you ever visited somewhere because you saw it in a movie?

I just finished watching "The Banshees of Inisherin" and I was like, "I want to go to Ireland now".

reply

I do the opposite, I often watch films and say I’ve been there (it might be a specific street or building).

reply

I've had that happen. I recognized almost all of "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" because they filmed it in Toronto. I also recognized pretty much every scene of Alfred Hitchcock's "I Confess" as the entirety was filmed in Quebec City. If you ever visit Canada, I'd recommend Quebec City the most.

reply

Canadia is quickly rising to the top of our holiday destinations and I will be tapping up the Canadian contingent for suggestions nearer the time (although sslssg has already started, bless her).

reply

Quebec City is our most European city. They look down on Canadian English speakers though. They treated my buddies and I like crap.

reply

You’re not really selling this to me, lol.

reply

No, you'll be fine. They don't hate visitors as long as they don't hear the English Canadian accent. I don't know if you know about the separatist movement there.

reply

I’m aware of it.

reply

It's a lot better now, but before if you spoke English there, they would tear your head off in you didn't speak French. Even if you were talking between friends. They still have language police there which sets standards for how much French should be spoken in businesses, or French written on forms, storefronts and so on. Other than that nonsense, great place.

Sacre bleu!

They really believe that. Well, not all.

reply

I know. It's not happening anytime soon.

reply

"It's not happening anytime soon."

you mean EVER

reply

Certainly not in the Bettman era.

reply

certainly Not in Any Era

reply

I like the look of the town (that Château Frontenac looks fabulous), but Québécois must be one of the most grating accents I've ever heard in any language.

reply

Depends on the region. I went to a college where about 1/4 of the students spoke French. There was a really hot girl there. One day I was walking down the stairs and finally heard her speak. It was the ugliest French Canadian accent I've ever heard. Honestly, she no longer seemed hot to me that's how bad it was. Anyway, I hardly hear her type of accent. Most of the accents there are perfectly fine.

reply

Ah, but your Canadian, of course they sound fine to you!

Really, the general accent you hear in tv shows isn't very atrractive to me either.

reply

That's the way I am.

reply

the hotel europe building in vancouver from the changeling (1980)
the spanish steps in rome from roman holiday (1953) and many others from that movie.

reply

I thought they filmed "The Changeling" in Toronto.

reply

just a few scenes around the university of toronto

reply

Devil's Tower. I probably would have gone anyway but Close Encounters was the primary reason I went.

reply

Is there some kind of acknowledgement of the movie there? Like a sign.

reply

Nothing in that way but a lot of stuff in the gift shop about aliens with some still-shots from the film.

reply

That's how it should be done. Why not make a few bucks off of something done in your town that has been made famous? As long as you're not damaging nature, of course.

reply

Not really but I've been to the goonie house.

reply

Does it look the same?

reply

is that really the info you want to know. I

reply

Okay, fine. Did you see Sloth?

reply

I saw Kowalski's house in a movie and went to visit it. He doesn't know yet though.

reply

You mean the house from "Psycho"?

reply

I think it was in a dirty movie, but I can't be sure because I watch so many.

reply

The house from The Beyond (1981).

reply

I saw that for the first time this Halloween.

reply

It’s quite nightmarish.

The only dinosaurs from California I know of sunk in water in the movie "Volcano".

reply

OH I JUST REMEMBERED...THE CABAZON DINOSAURS WERE IN PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE TOO!

reply

There's one movie released in the last few years that made me revisit Chili John's. It's been a featured location in at least one title on this list:

I had to Google that. It looks like they filmed Back to the Future there.

reply

And some other Oscar-winning movies to follow, including some titles in the Victorville Film Archives.
