Do you drink alcohol?
Rarely. Like 1x every 1-2 years.
shareAlmost never. Don't like the taste.
shareNo. I had a pretty strict, religious upbringing growing up. Neither of my parents drank.
shareSo apparently they never took Communion.
And religious Jesus never transformed water into wine.
So how is alcohol sacrilegious?
They took Communion...but the churches we attended (mostly Baptist denomination) all substituted grape juice instead of alcohol. That reminded me that I did take Communion in a Lutheran church once that used real alcohol.. I wasn't expecting that!
shareI’ve been meaning to reply to you, it’s just taken some time. I want to say that I like you and I fully respect your choices. Most posters here do not think their posts through, so I call them out. I am Episcopalian, but I have enormous respect for the beautiful rituals and mysteries of Roman Catholicism. The woman I love is Catholic. She abjures alcohol too, but will use other . . . let’s call them intoxicants. If drinking IS sinful, I can think of many worse sins in my sleep, and I don’t think our Lord and Savior would have been passing the wine around! You seem to be a good man. Welcome to this site!
shareThank you so much for your kind words and no apology needed!
I think a big reason why my mom was so "anti-alcohol" is that her dad/my grandfather was an alcoholic and he was a "mean drunk." I think he beat up my grandmother pretty good a few times when he was drunk. My grandfather and grandmother both had rough lives...they grew up poor in Appalachia and my grandfather had some really bad things go against him. I never had much of a relationship with him...he was eventually committed to a mental institution and spent the rest of his life in & out of it.
My wife is Ukrainian and she drinks enough for both of us! 😃 Beer is to her as Coca-Cola is to me.
Yes, even though I was raised that drinking is a big "no-no" and I don't normally drink alcohol, I don't think that drinking alcohol will keep a person out of Heaven by any means. I have some close Catholic relatives in my family...they can party with the best of them 😃, but I love them to pieces! I think drinking alcohol is a "personal choice" for a person.
Thank you again...have a great evening!
Thoughtful and tolerant post. Much respect R_Kane.
shareI am a Quaker, we don't do communion.
shareI've had about half a dozen glasses of wine/champagne over Christmas and New Year, and that's it till next Christmas.
