Do people still write checks these days?

I remember when I moved from NYC to Minneapolis in the late 1980s, I was astounded that people sometimes paid by check at a fast food restaurant. If you tried that in NYC they would have looked at you like you just landed from Mars.

I might write one check a year--if I owe taxes filing a paper tax return.

Yes. Because a lot of older people like things done the old fashioned way and don't like, nor trust newer technology. Especially when it comes to money. And having bills be paid automatically from your checking account opens you up to more of a chance of fraud and also for overdraft fees. Also, a lot of them don't even understand how to use computers or smart phones.

You can get free shipping from Digi-Key if you fill out an order form and mail it to them with a check instead of ordering online, which is awesome, because paying say, $7 shipping for a $0.10 resistor sucks. It's also nice for large items which tend to cost a lot more for shipping. For example, a few weeks ago I ordered a 4' length of 3M heat shrink tubing and instead of just folding it up to put it in a small box they sent it in a 4' long box, and it was still free shipping.

I'm still using the same checkbook that I got in 1999 and I have about 20 blank checks left. Even in 1999 I only used them for paying monthly bills, but once I got a PC and internet access in 2001 I started paying bills online so I didn't even need them for that anymore.

I don't as often but yes I still write checks. I'd say 2-3 a month for a couple of my bills.

I'm about to write one today. It's rare, but I prefer checks for certain bills especially if an electronic option isn't available or convenient. I'll staple a check copy to the bill as proof of payment.
