Do you read the Bible?

I've never read it.

reply

Only once the whole way through, but I read some parts from time to time. I think that's why I'm always surprised when I go back to it - Genesis is wild, and that's only the beginning.

No. Too long and boring.

There was a time when I read the Weekly Torah Portion every Shabbat. There are some beautiful verses that I sometimes like to quote.
I also celebrated a Bar Mitzvah in the synagogue if that counts.

I wonder if in the USA and Canada (I mention these two countries because most of you are from there) do not study or have studied the Bible in schools?

reply

I'm in the U.S. I think our public schools are not allowed to teach from The Bible, because that would be seen as "endorsing" a religion. You can teach about religion and mention Christianity/The Bible...but I don't think teachers would be allowed to read from it today.

Here in the U.S., we do have private schools that are allowed to teach religious doctrine (mostly Christianity, although I'm sure there are other religions that have private schools also). The problem with that is, if you're an "average American" like me with multiple kids, it is very expensive to send your children to private schools. Most people here just can't afford it.

reply

More and more people are sending their kids to private schools or home schooling due to all these school shootings happening lately.

Make sense, in United States there is a separation between religion and state.
I thought maybe they learns at least the basic stuff, not for indoctrination reasons, just for general information.

reply

No. I've read lots of "parts" of the Bible for school and in Church but I would never try to read everything.

I tried to read the Thomas Jefferson Bible but I didn't get very far.
