Turner Classics Movies forums shutting down Nov 30th
I have posted on there from time to time. Nice board.
shareI have posted on there from time to time. Nice board.
shareWell that is a shame because, even though I have never posted there, I have stopped in a few times and thought it was cool to see an active forum dedicated entirely to classic films. At least the last time I looked there seemed to be a lot of traffic from passionate people.
Do you know why they're shutting down?
There was notice from the moderator, but I do not recall any specific details only that the forum started 20 years ago. I will have to reread it. The forum will remain until February, but only for viewing, not posting. I learned about a lot of movies I was not familiar with from the board.
shareLooking on the forum, it doesn't appear that the place has become a ghost town and it still seems pretty active, so this seems like a dumb decision. I hate to see a forum that's been around for so long, that's dedicated to such a cool topic, closing the doors for no apparent reason. I also just hate to see another forum close period, because so many have already closed in the wake of the popularity of Facebook, Twitter, etc.
shareTCM defectors are going to come here.
sharewelcome aboard!!
shareWe should make a posting there letting them know about MC.
shareWouldn't be a bad idea. We could certainly use the new blood.
Seems like I always see the same names around here over and over. Sometimes I wonder how many active users MC actually has.
i started a thread
https://forums.tcm.com/forum/142-off-topic-chit-chat/
That would be great
By the way, I did mention movie chat on the site. As well as TMDB. A nice site as well. I use to post on IMDV.2, but it has been awhile. Silent film fans have Nitrateville. I might have misspelled the name.
shareThat's a shame. Although I've never used the site (I don't have cable so I can't watch TCM even though I wish I could), it's still sad to hear this kind of news. I'll hazard a guess that it's a cost-cutting measure that we see a lot of these days.
sharePlenty of old movies on youtube and regular antenna TV if you don't mind commercials.
shareI live too far away from the nearest metro area to get over-the-air TV. It would take a really tall antenna to get regular TV and I can't afford that.
shareGood free movie website list:

Ads can be annoying. Archive (domain-free) and library-based sites are ad-free.
This antenna is available. But, don't climb it!

First thing that came to my mind is they may have chosen to moderate it (a wise move if you ask me) and as you say, it may be an unpleasant and cost consuming task so - why bother?
But I may be indulging in my own preoccupation with moderation of on-line activity, so I could be completely wrong as to why.
Excellent and precise answer.
It will go right over these gimme gimme heads.
If you want MC to get some movie talk, advertise our board on there. Refugees will go anywhere.
I have posted on there a few times, but tired of remembering unique passwords.
