I don't understand Judge Judy's appeal. Does anyone here like her?

I find her abrasive, rude and shrill.

She's great to use in prank phone calls

Hehe. I've seen some of those a long time ago. Judge Judy really threw the book at those idiots.

Same here. I found it pretty disgusting to discover that she was earning over $40 mil per season for being that way.

reply

She seems to think she's better than everyone else! Especially the poor.

I hate when she interrupts, puts down or makes sarcastic remarks towards people even when they make a perfectly, valid case. She's just so rude......

reply

Exactly. She would take cheap, condescending shots at plaintiffs presenting a valid case in a civil manner and then constantly brag from her perch of how smart she was. Like I said, disgusting.

reply

Um... she's paid that much to be that way.

reply

I was a fan years ago, but not so much anymore.

She’s ok in small doses. Like if I’m bored and flipping channels I might watch her show if I land on it, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to catch it.. it’s all pretty repetitive with the nonsense cases like neighbours squabbling over who has to pay for the fence to be repaired.

Judy’s schtick can be mildly amusing but it’s definitely schtick.. that abrasive attitude is turned up to 11 because that’s what people want to see from her. And I have absolutely no sympathy for the people she roasts on her show.. they know EXACTLY what they are in for when they agree to appear. If you don’t want a mad old harpee screaming at you, perhaps don’t go on TV and, instead, settle your disputes like a normal person.

reply

I agree with you; much of her persona is fabricated, because that's what she built her fame on and is what people want to see.

I often come away thinking, "What a Bitch!" But, when you see her on a talk show, she is surprisingly nice.

Where I think she's wrong is in refusing to hear their entire claim: "I don't do Pots and Pans." Why not, if that's part of their loss?

As for the litigants, I think they go to be on TV, for the trip (paid for by the show) and the other perks.

They certainly know what they're getting into.

reply

It's the same shit with Gordon Ramsey.

reply

Exactly. It's all just a tv persona.

reply

I strongly dislike her.
She is an asshole.

reply

Well, yes, but wasn’t that exactly the reason for her popularity? Who would watch people argue their mind-numbingly banal disputes if Judy was all sunshine and lollipops in her adjudication of them? I think secretly there’s a part of all of us that would like to be as blunt and dismissive as she is when idiots are bitching over idiotic things.

reply

Good point, I just find her awful.

reply

Fair enough too! Like I said, I can only handle her in small doses, but I would say I think she’s a clever lady who was smart enough to capitalise on her abrasive persona and amass herself a decent fortune along the way. I’m certainly not a fan but I do respect that she’s worked hard for her success, especially considering all those years she faced the daily grind of family court before she was famous.

reply

Hope, I hate her.

reply

She's so over-the-top it's funny. I don't know how much of her on-camera persona is a fabrication nor what she's like in real life. If this is her true personality then I wouldn't care for her because I don't like to see rude, obnoxious behavior being rewarded.

reply

TV shows are a social measure of the values of our society. Just keep that in mind when you consider the glut of TV shows that are abusive, abrasive and depend on people being shamed or guilted. That's pretty much what the bulk of us have become.
