Shakespeare is incomparable.

The first thing that came to mind is George Bernard Shaw.

Looking at Tony Award for best play (as opposed to musical) I had to go back to 2002 before I recognized a name, "The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?" and that only because it was written by Edward Albee (who also wrote Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?). Of course, that's Broadway. In NYC there are all kinds of Off Broadway and Off Off Broadway stuff. But I think star theater actors stopped being household names decades ago.
