Interior doors in America

Why is there such a big gap between the bottom of the door and the floor?

I always assumed that the inch gap at the bottom was for dramatic purposes in films & TV (seeing an intruder's feet on the other side). But I've seen a few pet videos lately of people's houses where this seems to be an everyday norm.

Every door I've ever seen (in Britain) is just millimetres above the floor.

What about other countries? Which one is normal everywhere else? Massive gap or to the floor?

Seems like it'd draughty πŸ₯ΆπŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

It's because we don't use the metric system

LOL

Sounds likely lol πŸ˜„

So when I take my morning dump the stench wafts out from under the door to share with the rest of the household.

πŸ˜„ sharing is caring ay 😌

It's honestly something I've never noticed or considered.

I think it could be because most houses are made out of wood. So there will be settling, and the wood may swell and shrink a bit depending on the weather. So if there isn't a gap the door could get stuck.

Ahhhh, this makes sense πŸ‘

There isn't always a large gap at the bottom of the door, but when there is, it's probably for clearance over a high-pile carpet.

reply

The videos I saw had wooden flooring but maybe it's there incase they want thick carpet.
I'd not thought of this, thank you. This makes sense along with sslssg's post.
In Britain we have to plane doors ourselves πŸ™„.

This article gives some important reasons for it. Besides door swing space and accomodating uneven floors, it seems air flow and furnace efficiency with HVAC cooling/heating systems are an important factors.

that's what i thought. europeans don't have a/c for some reason.

I occasionally watch Jay Leno's Garage YouTube channel and he has stated more than once that one area that American cars were always superior to European was air conditioning. Not a priority there.

reply

I always thought it was due to carpeting on one side of the door. Make it too low, and it'll drag on the carpet. Make it too high, and someone can peek in.

One reason is for modern air conditioner systems to work correctly. In a return air system the entire home needs all air to cycle back to the unit through, in most cases, a centralized duct. The larger the gap under doors the more efficient that circulation will be.

My sister had a house built with Central Air/Heat and that was exactly what they told her.
