Country music: a dead genre?

Obviously not all country music is the exact same but the genre as a whole seems to be suffering from some key issues

-the country sound: I don't know of another genre where all the singers adopt a southern twang "accent" when singing. even people from the north and Canadians. this leads to a stagnation. compare this to the range of sounds in rock. of course country singers don't all sound the exact same, but this unspoken rule of the forced accent leads to more uniformity in sound

-the dead symbolism and iconography of country. while other genres certainly reuse some , they seem far more innovative and come up with fresh ones. rap clearly has its go to's, but at least the creativity ( besides modern mumble rappers) that some good rappers have is impressive using metaphor, braggadocio, repetition, formulaic expressions, double entendre, mimicry, rhyme, and allusions. Rock doesnt seem to use such stringent ones and can be a ll over the place. certain sub genres like pop punk do all seem to be about a bad relationship gone wrong but still having your friends around. but this is a subgenera of a subgenere. so it suffering from what all of country does is not good

Meanwhile in country rye, whiskey, tailgate, church, truck. id be hard pressed to find a song without these. with almost every song being about love or going to the big city to party. its almost as if the country music has completely stagnated.

-not even trying to rhyme.... I mean when you just reuse the same iconography. you adopt a fake accent and sound the same. and now you make music that doesnt rhyme, what are you even doing? pop, rock and rap all sound significantly different from themselves only 10 years ago. good or bad at least its changing. is modern country music that noticeably distinguishable from itself 10 years ago?

reply

People don't like Country Music because they can't relate to being a Real Man.

reply

No, a lot of it sounds like nasal, whiny, crying-in-your-beer music.

reply

Terminator 2 was awesome as soon as it started because of Dwight Yokham. Every Terminator movie after has been trash because they started Terminator 3 with a gay parody of Dwight Yokham and its been all downhill ever since.

reply

is the constant whining about their girl and lost love being a real man? it all sounds the same.,

reply

I mean real country music is about living in a boxcar and eating a can of beans for dinner and getting no government assistance because you are white but i'm sure every real man has a heartbreak story. Its the fake men and wannabes that listen to Rap Music that act like they don't care about no females while they blowing up her phone 300 times in one night when she out at the club.

reply

so again constantly whining you are "drinking whiskey because I miss you" is alpha male and a real man? got it.

its not an either or "country or else rap about "bitches"there's plenty of hip hop/rap love songs, you've never heard of John legend? Andre 3000 (Outkast)? the coverage of topics in rock and rap is FAR greater than country. they also don't stick to the same 25 words. whiskey, bottle, truck, rye, church, cowboy boots, boys, beer, drinkin, blue jeans, windows down. hell did I say 25? I meant 14. could you show me two country songs that dont say these? every genre has a tendency to be "mainstreamed" and "converge" on a similar sound. like when the Beatles and monkeys got big you had increase of similar sounds.

listen to stingray music, their 50s Chanel, 60s ect. each decade will have a similar sound. Country has put this on steroids. not only do you have to have the exact same instrumental sound, even if not from Nashville you have to fake a southern twang

At least rap rhymes and use double entrendres and metaphors. lots of country singers aren't even trying anymore.

reply

Every female i know has as long as i remembered only played the current Hip Hop and R&B songs on the radio and looked down on any other music as weird and stupid and now they are all seeing themselves getting into this Bubble Gum Country crap and wondering why they are suddenly into country and think it must be because they are getting older but its really because Country is turning itself into the Bubble Gum Pop crap they love. Country music isnt dying, its just doing what MTV and Rap music did before it and catering themselves out to women to make a profit.

reply

"Every female i know has as long as i remembered only played the current Hip Hop and R&B songs on the radio and looked down on any other music "

okay? good for fucking you and your anecdote. you still have addressed A SIGNLE POINT of my three major criticism. you said "ya but here's one artist who isn't like that!!! here's her album"

I listened to her first song. it was EXACLY THAT

"they are all seeing themselves getting into this Bubble Gum Country crap and wondering why they are suddenly into country and think it must be because they are getting older but its really because Country is turning itself into the Bubble Gum Pop crap they love"

AGAIN and? I don't get what you write this shit, thinking its a counter to anything I said at all.. yess you aged, peoples tastes change. some 20 year olds you knew now are 40 and now listen to country.

WHoopdie fucking dooo

reply

Again the very John Legend video you posted to prove a point to me won CMT Video of the year and in his speech he mentioned every genre of music but Hip Hop soooo you're dumb.

reply

Yes it proves he didnt one duet with a famous country singer. singing a non country song. using his normal soul/pop vocals and piano, singing with Carrie who lost her southern twang.

notice how he didnt mention Soul, and hes literally one of the most famous modern soul singers. he wasnt mentioning every genre he sings you dumb fuck

you've now latched onto "hip hop" because you think it gives you an out form your stupid fucking "hes a country singer" nonsense

never go full retard

reply

See he will collab with Kanye and Will i Am because they are important men of culture and there music is country in its own way just not this country and he is actively trying to be the center of all culture as he looks like a man who is a mix of all cultures and as much as you want to dismiss Country from his resume due to personal bias, John Legend himself would disagree with your assessment.

reply

wtf are you even talking about? you are trying SOOOOO HARD to link him to country, cause he did one duet. which wasnt even a country song LOL

Vs his 99.9999% of his entire career of pop, R&B, soul and hip hop songs and collaboration

no if you asked legend "are you a country singer" he would laugh in your fucking face

now get fucked you clown. some people stay bithces their whole life who can never man up, like you

reply

But in the end its all just gonna be music for women anyway so i don't care, i'm just gonna be listening to Gangsta Rap, 80's Metal and Sh*tkicker country music and not giving a wet fart about what John Legend is doing but enjoy your Hybrid Hip Hop, Country, R&B, Blues Pop Crap made for White Women ya Frackin Smuck

CMT Award for Video of the year

reply

yes one award for one video for a duet he didnt with a country singer that wasnt even a country song. and him not singing "country" in the slightest.

"OHHH MUHH GAWD hes a country singer!!!!!!""

vs an entire career in pop, soul and R&B with 40+ awards in those genres

"nope def not a soul singer hes country"

DERP DERP DERP. the dumb bitch strikes again. now describe in specific detail what in that video is "country". was it the pure piano instrumentals? was it his normal singing? was it the non country lyrics? or was it carrie sounding the least country she ever has? be specific bitch

reply

Country music is in his resume whether you like it or not so you can stop spamming cherrypicked accolades over my very true comments you have no rebuttal for but feel you must win at all costs for all the guys watching.

reply

ohh look when you google the song!

"Hallelujah"
Genre: Christmas pop

written by John and Tony Gad. oh look! hes a pop, r&b song writer!!

https://secondhandsongs.com/artist/42306

reply

I don't know anything about John Legend but i know Country when i hear it and i know when a woman is listening to a Country song and they all are with "All of Me" i promise you

reply

you know a song written by John and a pop writer, played on a piano, sang by John not using any of the symbolism of country, and is just your classic soul love song, is a country song?

HHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHh all of me is now country too! what next are you going to try and hijack for country?

led zeppelins albums? the beetles?

HAHAHAH you fucking clown

reply

Led Zeppelin and the Beatles suck

reply

I am done responding with facts, logic and legit arguments. you are a fucking clown and all you deserve is insults for your low intelligence and stupidity

you fucking clown

reply

Just face it bro John Legend wants to be every genre including and likely especially the most stereotypically white one.

reply

yess he wants to be every genre. he just doesnt know it. only a fucking loser on movie chat claiming "I promise bro im right" knowns.

fucking idiot

reply

Read it you moron

https://www.everythingnash.com/john-legend-on-country-collaborations-those-boundaries-are-artificial/

reply

eat shit you fucking idiot

first sentence "John Legend might be one of the reigning pop and R&B superstars,"

reply

It dont say Hip hop though does it? In fact Hip Hop isnt mentioned in the article at all. John Legend wants to be an R&B Country Blues 1960's Hippie Rock singer and doesn't want to incorporate Naughty by Nature into his act and thems just cold facts.

reply

you are a fucking idiot. delete your account

reply

So you're rebuttal to the article that just rips your entire arguments into little itty bitty pieces is "Eat Shit, Fucking Idiot, delete your account" and cherrypicking the first sentence and ignoring the rest? Sounds about right of a bot.

reply

were you'd dropped a lot? or just a failed abortion? eat shit you loser

reply

"Led Zeppelin and The Beatles suck"

reply

and John Legend is a country singer...... this guys full of wisdom..

reply

song was nominated for Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.

but its def country......................... no one knows it though

reply

You're just a gatekeeper trying to put a line on what John Legend is allowed to be based on your personal bias while John Legend himself is trying to cross all genres into one as stated in my link but by all means ignore my link and spam me with useless Grammy Stats.

reply

you went full retard. no one recovers from that

reply

Grammy, Full retard, Grammy, Full Retard. You must be one of those Russian Bots i heard so much about?

reply

you are a fucking idiot.never go fill retard

reply

Its funny how you say Country is a dead genre that doesn't evolve then put a false Hip Hop label on John Legend because of the color of his skin while he is doing Country Duets with Carrie Underwood and all the females in the country are just eating it up.

reply

wtf does it have to do with the color of his skin.. people ate it up because hes a talented singer. yes he did a duet "hallelujah" with Carrie? and? plenty of singers do this. a or a few duets are hardly a fuckign innovation fo the genre. your point proved nothing.

https://youtu.be/4KiFSKLTj0U

This ISNT A COUNTRY SONG. this is pop. its a song on a piano, with Johns normal vocals. Carrie sounds like a normal pop singer. her southern twang is gone and none existent in this song pretty much

i cant believe you wrote this thinking "nailed it"

reply

That is a Pop R&B Country Duet 100%. No Hip Hop whatsoever and if you think "All of Me" isnt the biggest Country song in the Country right now you are fooling yourself.

reply

You think you have Country Music "Nailed down" when the reality of the situation is its merging itself into your Hip Hop and R&B and you are too much of a bot to realize it and the end result is all the genres are gonna end up horrible for it and have.

reply

its "merging" because you called Legend a country singer because he did a duet with Carrie, who together sung a non country song.

you are fucking delusional and an idiot

reply

You think im just some Twanger listening to Dwight Yokham in my MAGA hat but i grew up on Three Six, Project Pat, Kool Keith, Esham, Master P, Bone Thugs, Dayton Family. Real Rap son and sometime around my junior year in high school Ja Rule and Chingy started coming out with all these Loverboy Rap songs and all the girls went nuts and the rap game been whack ever since and let R&B bury it while they call themselves Hip Hop and R&B to acknowledge the merger but got your boy John Legend trying to collab himself into turning it all into Country R&B turn Gangsta Rap and sh*tkicker country into relics of the past.

reply

And at the same time i love real country. Moe Bandy, Lefty Frizzle, Eddy Arnold, anybody name Hank. I even like the Western Side of Country and Western with your Slim Whitmans and Marty Robbins. I also like good Rock Bands like Icon, Grim Reaper, Metal Church, Lizzie Borden, Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer. The 90's turned it into grunge and it was just alright and its been all dowhill ever since.

I like good music of all genres in it's rawest most pure form because i am a man of culture while you seemingly only root for your own culture.

reply

You think im just some Twanger listening to Dwight Yokham in my MAGA hat but i grew up on Three Six, Project Pat, Kool Keith, Esham, Master P, Bone Thugs, Dayton Family.

holy fuck where did I say that?can you actually address my points and make a coherent argument, rather than going on theres non related rants

first its
Its the fake men and wannabes that listen to Rap Music that act like they don't care about no females while they blowing up her phone 300 times in one night when she out at the club.

Now you are a rap conoseur.

i grew up on Three Six, Project Pat, Kool Keith, Esham, Master P, Bone Thugs, Dayton Family. Real Rap son and sometime around my junior year in high school Ja Rule and Chingy

you arent addressing ANYTHING I SAY ever. you go on these fucking non connected rants and you look like an embarrassing loser

Now you decide what rap is cause you listened to Kool Keith in the 80s/90s. how fuckig pathetic is that? talking about "the rap game". you sound like a loser

your boy John Legend trying to collab himself into turning it all into Country R&B turn Gangsta Rap and sh*tkicker country into relics of the past.

My boy? MY BOY? wtf are you talking about? hes country R&B because he sang one non country song, with a country singer?

you are fucking stupid.

reply

I am a conoseur thats why i bow out of genres when they become commercialized crap and stick with the good stuff. Can i not like Good Rap without realizing what bonehead and/or criminals it has made everybody i grew up with? Can i not like Good Country Music without being a beer swelling redneck? Can i not realize that Country R&B is becoming the next big wave without some purist in denial insulting my intelligence on Social Media?

reply

you are an idiot man.

the only purist is you. who actually said John Legend was country LOL

reply

"Those boundaries are artificial to begin with, there is so much we have in common as musicians, so much commonality between R&B, Country, Rock and Blues, When we come together and want to create something beautiful we can in a way that is genreless and genre defying" - John Legend as he played the Nashville Ampitheatre and won CMT Music Video of the year award for the very video you posted.

Notice he didn't mention Hip Hop in there did he? R&B,Country, Rock, Blues. No Hip Hop.

reply

yes there is commonality among genres. WHOOPDIE FUCKING DOOOO. next shocking revelation from BOssdog "the sky is blue"

your name is an insult since its clearly its the opposite. you are a dumb weak bitch.

notice he didn't reference pop? notice he didnt reference soul specifically? notice how if you google him it says "r&B/soul"

notice how pretty much very award he has won related to musical genre is R&b/soul/pop

how fucking stupid are you? delete your movie chat account please. you are MCs dumbest bitch

reply

remember man. always stay the dumb sack of shit you always are. you pathetic fucking loser

reply

The guy who names himself after Leonardo Dicaprio who is a big John Legend fan but can't accept that John Legend is trying to appeal to white women thinks i'm pathetic? Go change your damn diaper son.

reply

remember. you will always be a dumb loser. you got rekt here kid

reply

dumb question by someone who probably couldn't list 5 of the lesser known country artist

reply

good rebuttal. you coudlnt argue a single point. fail. now move on kid

reply

i read the first couple lines & knew you were trolln

reply

well you are dumb as fuck then. I gave three concise arguments why country differs form other genres, and why this fall has lead to stagnation in the genre.

but its far easier too stay dumb and shut off your brain huh? gtfo drool chin

reply

[deleted]

except im not. that's why you cant rebut my points. as I said, stay dumb man, it suits you drool chin

reply

[deleted]

good one. and you count address a single thing I said. so against tay dumb, it suits you loser. you dont seem to ever add to any convo. you dont have the mental capacity to do so

reply

[deleted]

yaa so leave bitch. you've been unmanned

reply

and saying they all have "southern twang" is as ignorant as saying all rappers sound black

reply

and dumbest comment award goes to......

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/southern-accent-country-music-singing-alberta-1.5998048

"""The same would apply for singing … [and] if you are going to be an authentic country western singer, well, you better sound like one." And the tendency to adopt accents isn't limited to country singers who subconsciously seek to connect with their audience, and benefit from the affectation."

https://musicnerdshq.com/why-do-country-singers-sing-with-an-accent/

"Although a heavy southern accent is natural for many country artists, some singers who use fake accents include Tyler Hubbard, Gary Allen, Drew Gregory, Keith Urban, and Garth Brooks."

reply

opinion formed from article, makes sense now

reply

facts confirmed by multiple articles. I can get you abunch more? but its only the most obvious thing ever and it takes 2 seconds of research to see plenty of country singers sining with a twang arent even from the south, let alone the US period.

you can welcome the new information, and say "wow I learned something new, this is true"

or you can stay ignorant and dumb. further embarrassing yourself by denying objective facts cause you cant man up..

https://youtu.be/DFmLWkooQ7I

this guys from New Zealand...... nope no ones putting on fake accents in country...............................

reply

I'd say the genre is no where near dead with that many views

reply

and nothing. just admit you were wrong man. what's with people unable to man up and instead changing the topic LOL

"I'd say the genre is no where near dead with that many views"

and garbage mumble rappers get equally as many views. it changes nothing about my argument at all. thanks for not engaging and proving nothing. then copping out

reply

the topic was "dead genre ? then you listed off some silly criticisms you read somewhere about music you don't know enough about to prove anything. if it sounds good then listen to it if it doesn't don't go on a movie message board & nitpick, and go read about making a point without the constant insults

reply

I made the Op believe it or not I know what it was about.

I listed three pretty clear criticisms/issues. not a single person has addressed any of them. including you :) who just said "they are silly"

wow what a deep and through rebuttal!

I also posted other articles talking about one of the same things (the fake accents and everyone using them). you said

"opinion formed from article, makes sense now"

I actually formed my opinion before the article. I just gave it after to support me. hence why the article wasn't used in my OP dumb fuck.

you dont give arguments. you give whining crying complains.

"go read about making a point without the constant insults"

LOL go read about making a point period. You seem incapable of it. I Amy insult but at least I make coherent arguments backed up with facts.

you whine, cry then play the victim that mean Leo said you were dumb :(

reply

meaningless Leo makes more sense

reply

yess my points are coherent... just like my original ones... saying

"they are silly" and giving no specific rebuttal is not an argument

saying

"opinion formed from article, makes sense now" after you said "and saying they all have "southern twang" is as ignorant as saying all rappers sound black"

and I gave you evidence of it. IS NOT AN ARGUMENT.

holy fuck you just keep failing more and more. you've doubled down on your stupidity

reply

Not where I live. That new country sound fills stadiums.

reply

you clearly didnt read my comment then

reply

Clearly you don't like it or think its dead artistically I guess, but what I was getting at is that there are a lot of people who disagree with you. It's not what I'd consider a "dead genre" when so many people love it.

reply

I actually like a few. everyone who disagrees just say 'yaa but its popular!". which I never said it wasn't. amazing how no one here has. if you disagree rebut my points

reply

Aw Hell No, Bubba! I'm not a big fan, but it's stronger than ever. What have you been smoking?

🀠

reply

ohh im not denying its popularity. im denying its artistic creativity

reply

Okay then. I'm not a big fan either, but I think its creativity is amazing.

😎

reply

I aint taking that bait

reply

trucks, women & church right

reply

Those are definitely three main themes.

😎

reply

i hate it personally. i listen to the old stuff.

reply

I like some romantic slow country music, for example, one of Keith Urban's songs.

reply

do you hear any "twang accent" in his voice ?

reply

Yes, I do, but I'm not bothered by it.

reply
