do you like public speaking?

for the past year i have been working for this condo corp as an external overseer. we have one meeting a month online which is easy. tonight was the annual general meeting so i had to stand up and confirm that the condo board was handling the finances in a proper manner. there were about ten people there but i was sweating bullets.

Hate it.

It's been years since I've had to do it, and always found it rather terrifying. The best way to deal with it is preparation, preparation, preparation, rehearse, rehearse, rehearse.

reply

I agree. Preparation and rehearsal is the key.

i was sweating like nixon at the 1960 debate.

I’m very comfortable with speaking to large groups, I frequently have to do it for my work.

They used to tell us kids in little kid school about how to make a speech, ‘just imagine them in their underpants out there in the crowd’ but I disagree with that.

Go out there and be cool, toss compliments at the deserving, hardly anybody is listening anyway, it goes quickly, I do this a lot.

I have a public speech to make tomorrow in front of several hundred people, I always keep it VERY short as nobody cares about speeches and the audience will naturally all want to get out of the venue ASAP.

Simply shout out the top work performers, thank everybody else and leave…your coworkers will appreciate this.

If you time it right you’ll pull out out of the parking lot before anyone and avoid the traffic, these events are annoying but they are easy enough, no worries.

I see you like public speaking, but do you like public spanking tho'?

reply

Been doing it for years and years, so at this point it's no sweat. One trick is to make eye contact with one person in the audience for a sentence or two, then switch to another individual and repeat. I guarantee no one is paying close attention unless they have a crush on you and/or is a Chinese student.

reply

I do it quite a bit and I don't mind it. I always get butterflies right before, but I like them. I've also been performing on stages since I was a child, so it's just something I've always done. I agree with the statements of, don't imagine anyone in their underwear, and also just make eye contact with one person at a time. It makes it easier to connect with your audience. I mean even if it's a few hundred, just talking to one person at a time can help.

i played a tree in a school play once.

reply

Did you have any lines?

reply

none at all

reply

Was any ‘method acting’ involved?

reply

You must have been a tree w/o bark or any other distinguishing features ?

reply

I've done it, but it's certainly not something I enjoy.

reply

i'd rather talk smack behind a screen

The Office (US) Season 2 Episode 17: Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) has pulled another prank on Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson), who has to give an acceptance speech at a big convention, and has severe stage fright. Jim gives him advice on how to give a speech, without explaining that he's telling him how famous dictators spoke, such as Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini. Here is what happened at the convention:
