About Scar from The Lion King (spoilers, perhaps?)

Do you think Scar's name and voice actor (Jeremy Irons) are of importance to his characterization? Mufasa, Simba, and many of the other characters were given African-sounding names but Scar is one notable exception. Also, another thing worth noting is that Jeremy Irons provided a British accent to Scar, while the others had North American accents.

reply

Zazu also had an English accent. Anyway, maybe Scar was only a nickname given to him after he got the scar on his face.

reply

Yeah, also Zazu but I think he was given Rowan Atikinson's voice for that uppity English accent associated with royal advisors or butlers. I think you're right about Scar being a nickname, though.

reply

It is a nick-name, yes.
Interestingly, it is not even certain what his real name is.
According to a story called "A tale of two brothers", Scar was originally known as Taka.
It is a Swahili word for "waste", so I wonder what his parents were thinking.
But it can also be a short form of the Swahili word for "wanted": "kutaka".
In an episode of the TV show "The Lion Guard", it is revealed that Scar's real name is Askari.
That had previously been the name of one of his ancestors.

reply

Because the British make the best villains.

reply

But of course!

reply

*rubs hands* Mwa-ha-ha-haaa!

Sorry, did I say that out loud?

reply

Kinda true. It's almost a cliche that evil Nazis in film must be portrayed by British actors.

reply

Jawohl mein Obergruppenführer!

I mean yes.

reply

Yes.

Firstly, Jeremy Irons being the voice actor for Scar is intrinsic to how Scar was portrayed - no other actor could have made him as sinister as Irons did in such a delicious way. He embodied the character.

I don't know what the word for Scar is in any African countries, but I love that Scar is his name, in that it first sets him apart from all the other characters and displaces him from his roots, since the scar on his face somehow replaced his actual name (because there's no way it was always Scar, he's Mufasa's brother), and then becomes something that consumes his whole identity while also being a symbol for all his later revenge plans.

reply

Pretty good response and what you said makes sense!

reply

Thank you, I didn't even go to the school of coherent thoughts, I just did the thing.

This explains some of it

Interesting!

I see a live action prequel ala Cruella for Scar. But who would play him?
