I can’t do Van Halen. My introduction to them was the song Jump in the 80s and I hated it with such a passion that I actively avoided exploring any of their other albums or songs. That song was just so lame, seriously even Bananarama’s music had more edge than that shit.

I felt the same way about David Lee Roth’s solo work. Those horribly cheesy videos he used to make… 🤮

reply

Oh David Lee Ruth’s solo career was so bad. I bought a greatest hits and I could barely finish the thing. You should check out their earlier stuff, it’s far more harder edged that Jump. Hell even the rest of the 1984 album (aside from I’ll Wait) is harder edged than Jump.

reply

Eat 'Em and Smile is a solid record. Yankee Rose, Goin Crazy, Ladies Night in Buffalo, and Big Trouble (my fav track) all pretty good. Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan are insanely talented players.

reply

Yeah, I know basing my dislike on one song is totally irrational. Cheers, I might get around to checking out the earlier stuff soon 👍

reply

Jump is pretty boring and it was also my intro to them at the time.

I like some of their songs but I find particularly during the Lee Roth era Eddie is just riffing rather than playing anything musical.

reply

Not a fan of Van Hagar? At least, not as much as the Roth years, I guess.

I'd move 1984 up to number two, but my list would be pretty similar.

reply

I actually really do like Van Hagar, in fact the only albums I legitimately don't like are Van Halen III and Live:Tokyo Dome. In fact I'd say Sammy is a better singer than Roth, but they wrote better music with Roth.

reply

I agree with your ranking, with the exception that I have no interest in anything after their 3rd album.

reply

While I’m at it, you should buy their albums on vinyl, it sounds so much better.

reply

As it happens, I own those 3 albums on vinyl, and have since I purchased them in '78, '79, '80.

( I also bought the CD versions as well )

reply

I own the first 6 on vinyl and they sound so much better. They are remasters though so I'm not sure how big of a difference that makes.

reply

i don't think i could listen to a vh album all the way through now, but i grew up with this stuff and all the songs are pretty much permanently etched into my neurons.

What about Street Machine or Musical Chairs?

reply

i have no time for that guy tbh.

except the first montrose album! that's great. if i were to include that, i'd probably put it below 1984, over eat 'em...

reply

Don't like Fair Warning except for Unchained or Van Halen 3.
All the others have at least 2 or 3 good songs. My favorites are Van Halen and 5150.

reply

it's hard to complain about a listing combined from many different charts

of course, preference is always subjective
