Ballet?

Do you like it? I can’t get into it. I like symphony concerts and opera from time to time, but ballet just bores me.

reply

I happen to love ballet. The dancers are extraordinary athletes, gymnasts raised to the Nth degree. I am not at all surprised that MovieChat does not appreciate the art. Saddened, just not surprised. Carry on with your Politics, Comic Books, and Who Does She Look Like? trivia.

reply

Not my favorite dance, but it's cool.

I adore ballet. I love the art of telling a story through movement. I can see how you might find some of the classics to be a little boring, but some of the new work by contemporary choreographers is absolutely stunning. I think there is still a stigma about men not being allowed to enjoy ballet.

R_Kane is 100% correct in mentioning the athleticism of dancers. Truly amazing what they put their bodies through.

reply

I also agree with you both about the athleticism that it would take. I love watching documentaries about ballet and the dedication it takes. And yes I do enjoy it.

reply

I took ballet lessons as kid but I was there more for the music than the dance. Bar routines are great workouts though. Still use some of the moves to warm up and stretch before/after running or cycling.

I love ballet! Have for decades! I go see live performances when I can, and there's a world-class ballet company within driving distance, and I'm going to see them on Thursday!

I've had to skip live performances of all kinds for two years, but now that the pandemic is in a lull and I'm about to start a lower-risk job, I'M BAAAAACK!!!

reply

Awesome, enjoy the show!!

Thank you! [Air kiss]

Not a fan, but still thought the ballet scene in Peaky Blinders Season 5 was pretty bad ass.

Thanks for all the thoughtful and varied answers. Still think ballet is an acquired taste and I’m still not tempted to acquire a taste for it. Ballet lovers, enjoy!

When I was a kid we saw The Nutcracker three or four years (at Christmas time, naturally). It's a good place to start. I also saw Petrushka a couple of times.

It was The Nutcracker that kind of killed it for me. So many toys dancing. Of course it was a ballet school production so the quality was uneven at best. I swear every kid at that school had to have a solo. My eyelids were so heavy, I must have nodded off but it still went long.

I saw Swan Lake years ago by the Boston Ballet Co. Loved the music, but the dances were so long. First the ensemble, then the prima solo, then the guy solo, then the couple, then rinse and repeat over and over….

reply

We saw it at the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center, which is about as good as it gets, in the US anyway. I have fond memories if it. Having said that, I haven't been to a ballet in many, many years.

reply

i shouldn't absolutely say no because i've never been to a performance and only know what i've seen in movies & on tv.

but no.
