Do you gamble online?

I see a LOT of ads on tubi for online slot machine gaming, and fewer ads for online card gaming. I am very suspicious. How can you trust the honesty of online gaming? How do you suss out your opponents in online poker? Can you see the real players? Cards are really the only
games of skill. Craps, slots, roulette are all blind luck.

I’m not criticizing you if you gamble online, and I’m excluding sports book from my question, because I think it is regulated enough to be a valid gaming choice. Have you had good experiences or bad. Can you recommend online casino play to your friends?

Every time I post on this site it's a gamble.

Amen, bro!

No, but life itself is a gamble.

I play poker online and have had success on multiple different sites over the years. My brother makes five to six figures a year doing it. He actually lives in Vegas now but ironically still prefers to play online.

To answer your question: No, you can't see the real players. Generally just a username and avatar. What exactly are you worried about? Playing against bots? Rigged algorithms?

Bots do exist but are pretty rare and easily detectable anyways. Plus they're really not great at poker—decent enough to turn a profit, but just barely. The value of a bot lies mostly in the sheer volume of hands it can play. They can be exploited by a good human player.

As far as hand rigging goes, I realize some people are adamant this is a fact of online poker. Honestly though, those people just aren't winning players, and would rather not admit that to themselves.

Poker sites provide detailed hand histories, which are constantly being data-mined by players. Thorough analysis would quickly reveal any deviation from the norm, providing hard evidence against any site using a rigged RNG. If any analysis has ever found such proof, I've yet to hear about it.

Online card rooms really have no more reason to rig the game than do brick-and-mortar casinos. Both type of operations are plenty profitable as is.

Thank you. I learned from your reply. One of my concerns about online poker is the inability to read tells from opposing players. It’s just like the situation on message boards, like this one. There are no physical or verbal inflection cues from the opposing player(s).

Do you have any experience with online slot machines? That is a completely different experience from poker. Poker, and other card games, depends on skill. Do you have any experience that makes you trust online slots as much as real world slots? I’m not challenging you with this question. I am genuinely curious. I am fascinated by casinos. They are the pinnacle of the hospitality industry.

I have experience with online slots. Askgamblers.com is a good review site.
Re: poker. Obviously online poker has nothing to do with any physical tells and all to do with betting patterns.

reply

Id personally stay away from online casinos unless you are an advantage player.

reply

Yeah, it's definitely more difficult to read people online. It mostly comes down to observing betting patterns, but after getting a feel for the game, there are other cues you start picking up on that can also be revealing. For example, the length of time a player waits before making a decision, or how they might respond when you say something via the chat feature.

Let's say someone makes a big bet and you're debating whether or not to call. You could ask: "If I fold, will you show your cards?". Of course they might not respond, but even no response can mean something. Especially if you've been playing with the person for a while and know their habits.

You can take notes on everyone you play with, and if you play regularly you'll often start seeing the same people over and over. Eventually you can compile pretty extensive dossiers on your opponents, which can be referenced at any time while playing against them.

Regarding online slot machines, I have no experience there. The only gambling I do is poker, sports betting, and—if I'm in a brick-and-mortar casino—blackjack. I did go through a brief online blackjack phase, but since it's impossible to effectively count cards playing online, there's no realistic way to win in the long run. Luckily for me, I happened to hit a hot streak, and walked away a winner.

Anyways, if you're just looking to gamble for fun, then I see no reason to avoid online slot machines or any other games of pure chance. Of course the house is going to have the edge whether you're at a casino or playing online, so it's a losing endeavor long-term. But as a form of entertainment, it's perfectly fine. And who knows, you might get lucky.

I think you are underestimating how good bots are. A bunch of them were crushing midstakes MTTs for a really long time and got banned from various sites but I cant imagine it being that hard to get new identities for them and continue playing them. The bigger problem now is real-time GTO software imo.

reply

I realize bots have won a lot of money on certain poker sites over the years, but if you compared the average per hand earnings of one bot to one good human player, I believe the human would far outperform the bot. Whereas a human player who wins one BB per hour could be considered successful, bots can be profitable winning only a tiny fraction of that, due to playing exponentially more hands (and logging many more hours of play than any human ever could).

reply

You are comparing mediocre/poor bots to good human players though. Most humans are not good at poker. Winning players in tournaments generally have to be better than 85% of the field to be winning. So a bot playing low to mid stakes who is not making any fundamental errors is still going to be much better than the average player at those stakes. I agree that the ability to play exponentially more hands increases overall profit but I don´t agree that bots in general are winning only a fraction of one BB per hour.

For example, I remember playing a Russian player at midstakes MTTs who used to play insane amounts of volume and always wondered how he won so much while being "so bad". It was years later I found out that this player was in fact a bot, and he used to crush in spite of being bad compared to a normal MTT reg. This was because it was actually pretty good against the field, playing aggressively, coupled with being able to play insane amounts off volume.

reply

No, my brother does and I think it’s weird because he’s smart (he’s a computer programmer!) and he should know it’s a rigged system.

I did had many years of playing poker star though. Thinking of it makes me want to jump back on a virtual table. I might even have like a 10$ balance still.

reply

No, I don't participate in any form of gambling. It's a big waste of money.

Same here.

I play fantasy football in a league and once I tried Draft Kings - didn't care for it for several reasons. That was my one and only time gambling online.

Every fart is a roll of the dice. I don't like to perform without a net. A bird in the hand is worth a stitch in time.

I like to play different games, but a special genre that excites me is shooters, but not any fictional or space-related, namely realistic. For example, I recently downloaded Battlefield 2042 from the pirate bay and got really excited about it. It's just so realistic, I completely felt like someone is in charge of a special unit that is ready for anything. A large selection of weapons, maps, great graphics will not leave anyone indifferent.

Apart from illegally downloading software, what does this have to do with gambling?
