Everybody should stop saying these things:

"I could care less"
"It's besides the point"
"Nucular"

Any others?

reply

"We're pregnant"

reply

Constantly declaring, "I don't care what anyone thinks!"

Translation; "I'm insecure and I'm desperate for validation and approval - from anyone".

If you didn't care what anyone thinks, you wouldn't even bring it up.

reply

expecially and some other dumb ones I can't remember at 5am

reply

Thankyou for not saying, "5am in the morning". Another pet peeve for me.

reply

lol, "like um really"... When anyone types out the word "Um" or "Like", I usually ignore them. Nothing interesting will come out of that person.

"Professionals" on TV who make millions a year use not only improper grammar, but annoying slang. They're trying to save the sinking ship of TV news, and it's so pathetic for them to try and sound like they're thirteen. They constantly misspell on the ticker, too.

"5am in the morning"

Hadnt thought of that one.

You've just ruined one of my favorite songs that has one of those (whats the word for a redundant word in a sentence?) in it !

reply

Moonlight shadow?

reply

That is a good song!

.. but no , I was think of "4am" by The Levellers

'Aks'. It's ASK. Why would you ever expect anyone to take you seriously if you can't say a simple three letter word?

'Aks' is not even a mispronunciation, it's a deliberate verbal misspelling. It's on par with, or even worse than, 'nucular'.

reply

For some reason I hate hearing "big old". Especially reading "big ol' ".
There's "good old", which is correctly used, when something is old.

But what if something is big, but new?

reply

Throwing shade
Clap back
Going viral
Took to social media

reply

Smash the like button. Ugh.

reply

There's the related "swipe right" and "swipe left." So stupid sounding.

reply

Calling a sandwich a "sammich." I've seen this in print, too. Grown adults who think it's funny or clever to use baby-talk.

reply

I hated when Carmela Soprano would call a sandwich a "sand" as in "You want a tuna sand?" How lazy can you be?

reply

Then there's the related term "sammie," which is more baby-talk, like a toddler calling a horse a "horsie."
I don't get where the M is coming from. You would think the baby-talk version of "sandwich" would be "sandie" or possibly "sannie," but for some unknown reason the N becomes an M.

reply

I don't recall her saying it, but I imagine that grating accent she had would have made it even more galling.

reply

I can't find a clip of it (she asks Meadow if she wants a tuna sand) but here is Tony saying steak sand

reply

Ugh. It's so silly and redundant and pointless. I'm guessing it must actually be a thing, right? I'm not in the US, is it a thing in some places there?

I watched The Wire a while ago and was really annoyed to see crime victims constantly referred to as 'the vic'. Is that a thing in the US?

Side note; where I am a sandwich is frequently referred to as a 'sanga'. Acceptable or no?

reply

I only ever heard Carmela and Tony saying it...never anywhere else. I wonder if it is supposed to be a New Jersey thing, I grew up in New York (next door to New Jersey) and I never heard anyone say it like that.

I see that sanga is Australian slang, and I've never of it until now. It sounds close to 'Sanka' which used to be a popular decaffeinated coffee here.

I liked "The Wire" and now that you mention it, I don't recall hearing "vic" anywhere else. On a couple 1960s-early70s police shows a white suspect could sometimes be referred to as a "male cauc" short for caucasian.

reply

Just spend the time on an extra syllable or two. Otherwise, where does it end?

reply

In Australia we say Sanga or Sarnie. We give everything nicknames.

reply

I see "sanga" containing the first three letters of "sandwich," but "sarnie" make no sense at all. Where does the R come from?

reply

"Reimagine" or "Reimagining" - Code word for let's f**k things up even more than they are now, or f**k up some classic book/film/thing

reply

Just like 'Making it their own' when referring to someone (over)-singing a well known song. In other words, ruining it.
