It looks like Kowalski had a good recent haul so here’s what I’ve got so far this year.

Has anyone else made any good physical media purchases?

Damn Allaby! This is some serious gourmet shit! Usually, me and Vince would be happy with some Arrow or Media Blasters, but he springs this serious Criterion gourmet shit on us! What flavor is this?

reply

I do love my Criterions. The Cinema's First Nasty Women box set is a lot of fun so far. I would recommend it to anyone who likes silent comedy.

reply

I currently own 19 Criterion Collection Blu-rays or DVDs, Allaby.
I'm sure that that's not nearly as much as you, Oh Bearded Wonder, but I like them anyway.
They are ...
The Kid (1921) - Blu-ray
City Lights (1931) - Blu-ray
Modern Times (1936) - Blu-ray
The Great Dictator (1940) - Blu-ray
Some Like It Hot (1959) - Blu-ray
Breathless (1960) - Blu-ray
The Great Escape (1963) - Blu-ray
In the Heat of the Night (1967) - Blu-ray

Broadcast News (1987) - Blu-ray
Ghost World (2001) - Blu-ray
Mulholland Drive (2001) - Blu-ray ... I have not forgotten that this is one you suggested I should buy. Thanks!
Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) - Blu-ray
Certain Women (2016) - Blu-ray
Personal Shopper (2016) - Blu-ray

Oh yeah, as far as Film Purchases go, I just ordered a two film multipack (two or more films in one package) from Amazon ...
Top Gun (1986) w/ Top Gun: Maverick (2022) - Blu-ray
This now brings my total up to 46 DVDs or Blu-rays in 17 store-bought multipacks.

I have over 300 Criterion releases now. Here is my list (although I have not updated it with today's purchases yet):

reply

Very impressive list, Allaby.
I am very glad that I looked through your entire list because I realized that I do not own 14 Criterion releases, I own 19.
Therefore, I have updated my previous list to include the five that I had missed.

Btw, I also own eight films on your Criterion list in just regular release format.
They are ...
Spartacus (1960) - Blu-ray
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) - DVD (my parents took me and my brother to see this on my 12th birthday)
Straw Dogs (1971) - Blu-ray
Nashville (1975) - DVD
The Last Waltz (1978) - Blu-ray
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) - Blu-ray
Bull Durham (1988) - Blu-ray
Defending Your Life (1991) - DVD

Finally, there are three films on my Criterion list that I love which were not on yours.
So as repayment for your suggestion of Mulholland Drive (2001), I would like to suggest that you pick up ...
Walkabout (1971), Tess (1979) and Local Hero (1983), if you don't already own them.
All three are excellent films.

reply

I love Walkabout, but don't own it. Tess was good too. I haven't seen Local Hero. I might eventually pick those three up.

I don't buy physical media. I learned early on that technology will evolve and you'll have to update your entire media collection every few years as new formats become the standard. I realized that you can bypass all of this by simply having all your media in digital format archived on a hard drive. You download your movies and TV shows in HD or Ultra HD format and you never have to worry about replacing your media.
Also, it might be difficult to find everything in physical format. However, if your collection is in digital format, MP4, MKV, AVI, then you can find any movie you can think of online for free, assuming you know where to look. If you are lucky enough to find a good source, you can get anything you desire in the highest quality. This is the smartest way to go.
