shareI called in vacation/family illness to work to visit my dad in the hospital. He had been fighting prostate cancer for 5 years and I visited him in the hospital 2 hours away because he was in the hospital. We talked about a plan of what to do next and getting out of the hospital amongst a lot of other petty things like chickens and football. I went home and my Mom called me at 4am, I didn't answer -dead asleep, she called again at 6am and I knew when I saw her name on the phone. He had a heart attack in the middle of the night, wasn't hooked up to a heart monitor because he didn't have heart issues or symptoms, by the time the hospital called my mom when they "revived" him he was dead at least 20 minutes and she said no he is gone let him go. The cancer had really killed him. No treatment ever really worked and it always came back so aggressive. He was just done and drained after his last treatment that didn't work.
Oh wow, sorry didn't read the title correctly. Well posting anyway for my best life thing that I did that I don't regret. I almost didn't call in annual/sick that day because I talked to my dad on the phone the night before and he said he was feeling OK and looking forward to get back home. I called off work and went anyway just to visit and that was the last time we ever spoke.
Wow, it’s great that you shared that. It really makes you think about what’s important.
shareNot following my Father's career advice. He was of the era of thought that if you didn't go business school and become a mindless drone of a paper pusher, you were nothing. I was committed to following what I was a technical field interested in and yet payed well, and didn't have a problem with getting my hands dirty.
I'm glad I didn't let my father force me into a job I'd hate. Some of my peers, as we all went into our respective fields, went the former route and were "successful" but miserable, and told me so.
