Was I being a jerk towards this customer?

One time I saw a customer walk in the store without a mask, I informed him of the store's policy that he has to wear a mask while entering the store, he arrogantly told me that he's not a Democrat and that he's medically exempt and walks in the store, when he walked out of the store I apologized to him for making him upset over the mask, he apologized to me in return for being harsh towards me with the way he spoke to me and didn't mean to do so, he also told me facemasks don't work and all what they really do is lower your oxygen breathing level.

I don't get why he would say that he's not a Democrat in a rude, snobby manner.

reply

I usually keep a box of masks handy and offer them to the customer if they don’t have one.

reply

It's unbelievable how people extrapolate shit now. I would never use the term Democrat or Republican or any other meaningless terms.

At least you two make some "peace".. Most people double-down and have a hard time apologizing.

reply

I think he came to a realization that he was lucky that the person who he was being a jerk towards ended up turning the other cheek and felt it was better for him to apologize, I can understand the anger and frustration of having to deal with the COVID pandemic restrictions, what do you mean by "double down"? I agree some people do have a hard time apologizing and don't like to admit that they're wrong, I thought he came across very snobby when he claims that he's not a Democrat which makes me wonder if he hates Democrats or looks down on them.

reply

People usually don't apologize, and will end up talking shit even more, to protect their own ego? Mix that with the anger they have against Democrats, which is silly, since there's millions of Democrats who won't get the vaccine either.

reply

I never knew there are millions of Democrats who won't get the vaccine either, I always thought it was mainly republicans who don't want the vaccine.

reply

I'm sure more Republicans haven't got the vaccine, but I also remember right before the election the Democrats saying, "I'm not taking no Trump vaccine"

I've seen on some mainstream polls where Independents outrank Democrats and Republican (which were about the same despite being the only major parties in the US) and only 50% is full vaccinated. What I DO think is that Democrats who aren't vaccinated just won't admit it. And maybe on the other side of the coin, the Republicans who DID get the vaccine won't admit it to their friends online... I see examples like this all the time, especially since I've been on a few chatting sites for enough years to see how people suddenly "change"

reply

The customer was a selfish jerk.

reply

Eh. You told the guy the policy. Any sensible customer knows the person behind the counter is rarely responsible for the company's policy, whether they agree with the policy personally or not.

Doesn't sound like you were being a jerk from your description of the incident. And it also sounds like the issue was resolved in a reasonable manner by both parties.

When he said that you should have whipped out a .44 Magnum and replied “Me neither punk” and gone all Dirty Harry on his ass.
