Was I being a jerk towards this customer?


One time I saw a customer walk in the store without a mask, I informed him of the store's policy that he has to wear a mask while entering the store, he arrogantly told me that he's not a Democrat and that he's medically exempt and walks in the store, when he walked out of the store I apologized to him for making him upset over the mask, he apologized to me in return for being harsh towards me with the way he spoke to me and didn't mean to do so, he also told me facemasks don't work and all what they really do is lower your oxygen breathing level.

I don't get why he would say that he's not a Democrat in a rude, snobby manner.

Anyway, informing is one thing, pestering is another and what you did doesn't sound like pestering.

I never tried to force him to wear a mask since we are not allowed to do so.

How old are you to not understand that kind of attitude?

Regardless of where someone stands on masks, I don't think it's fair to store personnel to make them the ones who have to try to enforce a mask policy.

If indoor masks aren't mandatory in your area, and my sympathies if not, then acceptable standards of behavior towards unmasked customers are set by your employer.

Which is too bad, because really, it ought to be not just legal but socially acceptable to visibly shun or harass the unvaccinated or unmasked. We ought to be screaming "PLAGUE VECTOR!! ANATHAMA!!!" at these people and spraying bleach on anything they touch, not worrying about their feelings.

Indoor masks were mandatory in our store and customers were supposed to be wearing them, I was just trying to follow the rules my employer have given me.

In that case, the reasonable course of action would be to calmly and politely explain the store's policy to him, say that the business have the legal right to refuse service to anyone who does not comply with that policy, state that you will not sell him anything, and politely and calmly ask him to leave. If he does not leave, remind him that security cameras are capturing all this, and call the police.

That would be the reasonable course of action, but I don't know if your boss is reasonable.


Edit: I've only seen this play out in real life once, since anti-maskers are so rare where I live (which is one reason I live here). It went like this: Cashier yells at guy coming in the door "Hey, can you put on a mask?", guy makes a disgusted noise and leaves. Everyone in the store gives him death glares as he goes.

Yes, it's absolutely astonishing how many people are completely indifferent to the deaths of others, will scream bloody murder if asked to make the tiniest personal sacrifice to protect both others and themselves, who will get threatening or violent if called on their shit, and who think their "freedom" to be an asshole is more important than the lives of others or the welfare of the nation they profess to love.

It's really brought out how many sociopaths there are among us.

It also saddens me that these people claim to be a "Jesus Loving Christian" yet they value their "freedom" more than the lives of others and could care less whether if someone dies of COVID, they think losing their "freedom" is worse than the COVID virus itself.

No, you weren't being a jerk; you were following store protocol. And you even apologized. I'm surprised the customer apologized, too.

I feel me apologizing is a good way to show this customer there are no hard feelings and that he has one shot at redemption, I was aware that we're going through a tough time and could understand his anger and frustration, I feel my kindness has inspired him to see the error of his ways, I know when people are being a jerk towards me I feel it's better to be nice to them in return because it's a good way to show them there are still some nice people out there in this world, it is sad some people have to insert politics into everything.

I totally agree about how the customer was the JERK. What's more, it was probably also a LIE about his being MEDICALLY EXEMPT, and what should have happened was have the STORE MGR call the doctor who treats them to VERIFY whether or not that was a FACT or NOT.

And IF it was not, then I also agree with OTTER about how the person who LIES should also pay a PENALTY for trying to LIE, because SPREADING GERMS is also a MATTER of LIFE and DEATH now.

In FACT on the news yesterday they also discussed how "DEATH PANELS" will need to be SET UP in IDAHO to decide WHO LIVES and WHO DIES, due to the way the HOSPITALS are OVERRUN and FILLED UP with UNVACCINATED COVID PATIENTS now.

And others have also DIED in other STATES because of the SELFISHNESS of the UNVACCINATED, like the VETERAN who needed treatment for his GALL BLADDER, but couldn't get it because someone else didn't want to be VACCINATED. So this guy who FIGHTS for his country and SURVIVES is also then KILLED by a fellow member of his own country who essentially became his ENEMY.

So in addition to showing VACCINE CARDS to enter a business, people should also need to show a MEDICALLY EXPEMPT CARD as well (which would also put an end to anyone trying to LIE -- or needing to put up with ATTITUDES like this other JERK displayed -- who most likely also had no MEDICAL reason for not wearing a MASK).

I don't believe he was medically exempt either because he seemed to be very healthy and was able to walk very well.

If someone told me that, I would just ignore it. A recent study showed what most of us knew already. Masks don't work.

No, he was rude. Places of business have conditions of entry. This may be 'wearing shoes' for example. Maybe you're near the beach and put a sign up saying 'No swimwear to be worn in store'.

If a business wants people to wear a mask to protect their staff, good for them.

If he doesn't think they work (and maybe they don't with the delta variant given the elevated level of transmisability) that's for him to debate elsewhere.

If my store said 'shoes to be worn' simply because I don't like barefeet, I shouldn't have to debate it with customers.
