The Olympics...

Is anyone else watching the Olympics? Very different feel without the audience plus, they are cutting out a lot of the competition in gymnastics and not showing all of the girl's performances from other countries. Slightly disappointing but, I am still watching it.....

Usually I catch the odd event, but I haven't seen a single second this year.

All of the events are odd.

I was wowed a short while ago by Ethiopia's Sifan Hassan, in the women's 1500 meters first heat. A runner in front of her fell onto the track, causing her to fall as well. She immediately got up, and in spite of the lost time, won the heat anyway. It was so reminiscent of what happened in Chariots of Fire (1981).

I've been watching considerably more of the games than I initially thought I would.

Not by choice. It's been dominating the news... even before the event began. Sometimes almost half of a news broadcast is about the Olympics. I was tired of it long before the opening ceremony, and will be glad when it's over with. But then there's the Winter Games next year, and we will have to sit through all this hype again. That's why I wish they would go back to holding the Winter and Summer Games during the same calendar year, as was traditionally done until the 1990s. Once every four years is enough.

No disrespect intended towards the athletes, who train for years to compete in this event. I just never could get excited about the Olympics.

My sentiments exactly. I'm just not into watching sports and the whole competitive aspect means nothing to me, though I catch static from some because I'm supposed to somehow be interested as a way of demonstrating patriotism for my country.

Like you, I've seen some but not by choice, but as a captive audience. I can't stand all the hype and drama.

I have a family member who is a big sports fan and loves watching sports, but mention the Olympics and his response is "meh..."

It’s been so overtly political. I never know when an athlete will take advantage of my viewing to make some political statement designed to get attention or outrage. And now the countries are using it like a propaganda opportunity. Most of the sports are so obscure that the average sports fan has never actually seen them being played. But I’m supposed to think it some huge achievement that China won the gold medal in women’s trampoline? Or some lady who came in second for throwing a cannon shot imagines such self-importance to presume anyone cares about her gestures for global oppression.

There's the political garbage plus the emphasis on sponsors. This line from the Wikipedia article sums it up: The growing importance of mass media has created the issue of corporate sponsorship and general commercialisation of the Games. Another example of sports being ruined by money.

Me too. I have not watched much this time but of the three times I tuned in, I have turned it off twice in the face of political BS.

I was already nonplussed about the Olympics but now I wonder if I'll ever watch again. Hooray for politics.

I did see a good story about a U.S. Olympic wrestler today that was actually inspirational. Maybe I was being too negative before. It’s easy to get that way with all the media corruption and beleaguered prima donna athletes. But this story was pretty good

Chances are she is going to be pressured by the tolerant left to backtrack on her comments and donate to BLM.

Nope.

🤨

reply

Haven't seen that much, other than the news coverage.

reply

I preferred the coverage when various countries were shown. At some point, they decided to only focus on one which is boring so I stopped watching. At least during World Cup Soccer many countries are still covered.

reply

We've been watching some each day
The gymnast men on that saw horse thing were pretty mind blowing today!
