Name a horror film that genuinely scared you.

I don't get those nowadays. I genuinely wish I did. I love me some Horror films that actually do their job.

1. John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) - The first film to ever give me nightmares. The head growing spider legs scared the shit outta me as a kid. Rewatched with my little sister recently & it holds up so well. My favorite horror film of all time. Also, freaking love that the characters aren't written like idiots for the sake of plot. A lot of horror movies do that & I freaking hate it!

2- The Descent (2005) - Saw it when I was a teen. Film uses jump scares so amazingly. The 'creatures' are freaking great. And as a claustrophobic, this film was an anxious watch. Rewatched it a few months ago as an adult, not gonna lie, some of the jump scares got me real good. Still one of the best horror films of all time for me.

3. Jeepers Creepers (2001) -I don't think its that Scary, I just saw it late at night & by myself. Pretty decent horror flick though. Some very well used jump scares

The Shining creeped me out. I don't bother to put that stuff in my head anymore. Real life is disturbing enough.

The Valachi Papers

1. House of Wax (2005)-It freaks me out because what if there were a group of criminals pulling people off of a highway somewhere and leading people to their demise by encasing them in wax.

2. Touristas(2006)-I hate this movie and felt complately disgusted while watching it. It makes me never want to travel anywhere tropical south of the border. It makes me think I could be a victim of crime and be lead somewhere where I could be harvested for my organs. Sick stuff.

Ghost Story (1981) https://moviechat.org/tt0082449/Ghost-Story
Maybe more disturbing than scary, although it did feature a couple of jump-scares.
This movie caught me totally off-guard, mainly because of the trite title and how Showtime (where I saw it) promoted it. A bunch of old guys sitting around telling ghost stories... big deal, or so I thought. It turns out this was not at all what the movie was about.
The manner in which the woman in the film dies was what really disturbed me. Just the thought of that scene still makes me cringe.

I love horror movies and have ever since I was a kid. I don't get scared by them, but there are scenes that have stuck with me since my youth.

Exorcist 3 hallway jump scare scene - First time I saw that it really made me jump

Clownhouse - the chase scene. Creep me right out (I know the background of this movie now so I won't ever recommend it but when I saw it when it first came out that scene really stuck in my brain)

Sleepaway Camp - The ending. Was waaaaaay too young when I saw it.

I agree with you about being creeped out versus being scared. Speaking of the Exorcist films, the one that stands out in my mind in this regard is, Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (2005). There's a scene where a pack of hyenas creep into an African village and snatch a young boy, are carrying him away while simultaneously ripping him apart. If I remember correctly, his older brother, also just a boy, was trying to save him. The chaotic scene with all the terrified screaming of the boys and the vicious snarls of the hyenas, was hideous, really creepy.

Yeah, I remember that scene. It wasn't a pleasant watch.

Anything involving alien abductions. I guess its the unknown I found scary.

Two movies that come to mind are

1. Fire in the Sky

2. The Fourth Kind

That creepy white owl in The Fourth Kind that wasn't really an owl. ;)

As a kid, The Omen. As an adult, Wolf Creek, which I watched when I was home alone and it unnerved me so much that I had trouble sleeping. That’s the only time I can remember having that kind of reaction to a horror movie.
